Northwestern Railway upgrades at Nelson Station improve water and coal supply
The Northwestern Railway Company enlarges Nelson Station with a new 200 foot coal shed on elevated frame work and a six car capacity. An improved coal delivery system feeds engines directly from a coal shed. A larger water well 16 feet diameter and 25 feet deep promises high output, with pumping rates surpassing 500 gallons per minute. Nelson becomes a chief water and coal hub between Chicago and the Mississippi.

Washington Letter from Oct. 12 1889 on Harrison’s political woes
The Washington letter details President Harrison facing a tough week with Mahone losing Virginia, Indianapolis turning Democratic, and soldier votes threatening Ohio. It notes Blaine’s favorable view of Mahone, Randall’s health and potential House return, Kellogg’s public attack, Knights Templar influence, and mint director picks affecting silver policy. Gresham predicts Cleveland’s renomination in 1892.
