Barnum Circus Prompts Dixon City Debate On Trade and Canals
The Dixon Sun discusses Barnum’s Dixon stop and argues shows draw money to local hotels and shops while canal projects like Hennepin, Suez, and Nicaragua plans affect Dixon’s prospects. Memorial Day tributes and critiques of public contracts mix with recollections of rail history and local civic pride. The piece laments parade ceremonies, praises civic memory, and notes aging engineers at a Chicago exposition ending with caution toward progress.
