Notable Illinois Figures and a Canadian Rail Disaster
The Dixon Sun reports the death of ex Senator William H. Barnum at 71 and Elijah M. Haines at 66, noting their political roles. It also covers a Grand Trunk railway crash near Hamilton Ontario where 20 passengers died as a fire ensued after the derailment. Contemporaneous political tension centers on First Controller Durham resigning amid voucher disputes with John A. Davenport over extraordinary election expenses.
