British troops push four miles on a 20 mile front amid fog near Queant and Doignies. Reports claim 10,000 prisoners captured in the area as lines extend to the north with cautious progress and no major breakthroughs yet.
Five casualty lists since Saturday raise total American casualties in France to 24 924. Illinois adds 165 names including KIA Corporal Fred Stack and Private Thomas Mann, with other Illinois soldiers among the wounded and missing. The report notes one airplane death and details by rank. Prominent Dixon postal clerk L B Miller shot himself at his home in Amosa, Tennessee, yesterday after illness prompted the act. No further details available.
Luelle B. Miller a 39 year old railroad clerk from Dixon Iowa committed suicide in Anamosa Iowa yesterday morning in a room upstairs at his mother in law’s home. He had been ill for months and had taken a leave from his run between Chicago and Omaha. He is survived by his wife daughter and three brothers. Funeral arrangements were not yet made.
Mr and Mrs Martin McDermott of Marion township received a cablegram on Monday afternoon stating their son Corporal Herbert D McDermott was wounded in action on August 6. The extent of his injuries is not yet known and his family hopes for a speedy recovery despite the distance and uncertainty.
American forces repulsed German raiding attacks between Hazebourt and Fismes and near Chateau Du Diable after a heavy bombardment. Machine gunners halted much of the effort with heavy German casualties and nightly Vesle patrols pressed the fight while an American plane downed a German balloon.
Joseph Whipple lifelong city resident dies after lingering illness at 12:30 at his brother Leonard Whipple's home. Born in Dixon on November 79 870 he lived here most of his life. Survived by three brothers and two sisters. Funeral from Preston chapel tomorrow at 2:40 PM with Oakwood burial.
Roy Bridges received word that his sister Mrs. L. A. Ashby of Cedar Rapids has been ill for weeks and is failing rapidly with little hope for recovery.
Miss Charlotte Campbell returned Monday from a short visit in Chicago.
The Lee county loyalty committee summoned Miron I. Royster of Chicago road south of Dixon and two others for unpatriotic remarks and crude bets on the war. Royster received a warning after a lecture, while the others were dismissed after similar cautions.
Mr and Mrs George Downing spent Sunday and Monday in Chicago with no further details on activities or companions provided.
The notice cites numerous violations of U.S. orders to save gasoline with many vehicles out Sunday. It notes a high count of violations and indicates the number of Dixons cabs observed elsewhere likely exceeded two hundred.
Police report that over 200 motorists in Dixon violated the national gasoline saving plea by driving Sunday as tourists swarmed the city. Mrs. Margaret Sheehan has heard from her son John Sheehan in France. He serves with Company A, Thirteenth Regiment, American Engineers and is on an eleven day furlough. He sends his picture home and says the French treat American soldiers very well and that he is in good health.
United Press dispatches report the steamer West Hazen escaping after being fired upon by a trmarine about 200 miles off Hallefax August 31. Saloniki notes increased Balkan front activity with General Sarrally reporting the capture of a whole enemy salient in yesterday’s update.
Information sessions will be held at the headquarters of the N. W. H. D. N. C. in the current week to explain enrollment in the nurses reserve program. Residents may visit to learn requirements and processes from officials on site.
County faces need to supply portion of 8000 nurses for Hinds recruitment as the U S government calls 25000 student nurses for army hospitals Red Cross and civilian work. Women 19 to 35 urged to enroll with options to defer until April 1919 or pursue Army Nursing School tracks. Some may gain hospital credit for training and education.
Report from Paris dated September 5 describes French lines near Chamin des Dames and Laffaux repelling German probes. German guards report attacks five miles north of the Aisne without success as the positions hold against offensives.
French and American troops push toward St. Quentin along du Nord in the Naile region. They gain new ground near Guiscard and Couchy Le Chateau while German roads are blocked and transports move northeastward. Prisoners are reported as captured as retirement toward St. Quentin continues.
