Stockholm reports Finke near declaring war on the allies. Finnish troops allied with 60,000 Germans poised to campaign into the Russian Murman district. Allied forces including a few Americans guard military supplies.
British and German forces clash as General Haig’s troops press a strong attack on the town of Hamel. Front lines hold firm with infantry and artillery exchanges continuing amid harsh fighting conditions.
Medill McCormick Republican Senate candidate spoke to about 3,000 people at a camp meeting grounds on patriotism, recounting his visit to the western front and urging Allied efforts. Senator Adam Cliffe of Sycamore introduced him. July Fourth events at Franklin Grove included races, sports, and band music with a Scout baseball win for Ashton over Franklin Grove in the morning and a 3 to 1 afternoon win by Franklin Grove.
London July 5 United Press reports a German counter attack on Hamel captured by Australian and American troops yesterday morning was repulsed. Haig says prisoners taken in yesterday's Somme advance exceed 1,300 with a field gun 100 machine guns and several trench mortars captured. A raid in Beaumont Hamel succeeded.
Marshal Haig said British forces attacked along a four mile front between Villers-Bretonneux and the Somme and gained about a mile and a half in depth. They captured the village of Hamel and the position known as Waire wood, about one mile south of Hamel.
British and Allied troops pressed the Morlancourt sector on a 1200 yard front with tank support. The forces reached 400 yards depth and captured 450 prisoners as of the filing.
British troops attacked east of Amiens and captured Tiamel northeast of Vijlers Bretonneux, widening the line by over a mile and taking more than 1,500 prisoners. North of this sector a second breakthrough along the Somme and Ancre displaced the line 400 yards over 1,200 yards, with several hundred prisoners taken.
Paris dispatch from July 5 shows wartime office reporting patrols that resulted in additional prisoners. The brief item confirms ongoing military operations and captures during the conflict.
Italian forces crossed into action on the Piave following a furious bombardment that burned and destroyed bridges. Italian troops reportedly captured several groups of enemy soldiers among canal networks in the region.

Two youths drowned in Pine Creek near the Pines in Ogle county while swimming yesterday. Fred Bohlen 15 of Mt. Morris and a 17 year old DeWall of Forreston fell into a deep hole. a second boy attempting rescue also drowned. Bodies recovered. inquest planned for tomorrow.
Miss Faith Neighbour secretary of the geological survey at Urbana visits her parents for the weekend. She plans to travel to Minnesota to visit a sister and then to Sioux City Iowa to stay with Mrs. Vernie Buettler for the remainder of her vacation.

In San Francisco on July 4 a record ship launching day saw fifty four ships, totaling over 50 000 tons, launched from Pacific coast yards. Among them twenty four wire steel vessels exceeding 150 900 tons, and thirty Ferris type wooden ships about 102 000 deadweight tons. Charles M Schwab, head of the Emergency Fleet Corporation, witnessed eight destroyers launched at San Francisco and a quadruple launching at Alameda.
Twelve ships launched in New York and surrounding yards. Submarine Board Corporation built three. Standard Ship Building, Shoutiers Island, New York, built one. Texas Company, Fath, Maine, built one. Cramp & Sons, Philadelphia, built one. Pennsylvania Shipbuilding, Gloucester, built two. New York Shipbuilding, Camden, built one. Bethlehem Shipbuilding, Wilmington, built one. Pusey & Jones, Wilmington, built one. Baltimore Drydock & Shipbuilding, Baltimore, built one.
On July 5 five vessels totaling 15000 tons were launched in Alabama and Mississippi yards. A wooden steamship and a steel minesweeping tug slid from the ways in Mobile. Two large wooden steamers and another wooden vessel were launched at Moss Point and Pascagoula respectively in Mississippi.
In Superior Wisconsin the Lake Aurice a 3400 ton steel steamer slid down the ways at 12 01 yesterday. The Ocke Borgue another 3400 ton vessel was launched at 8 21.
The ocean going freighter Winthrop was launched yesterday in Manitowoc Wisconsin attended by about two thousand five hundred witnesses. Mrs Emily Kott christened the ship, wife of John Kott noted for the best riveting record from June 11 to July 1.

A practically new wine colored Ford touring car was stolen from Mendota streets last evening at about 9 o'clock by two young men. The theft was reported to local police shortly after, and officers are investigating the incident.
A new shipment of seven Fordson tractors arrived yesterday at the George Nettz company and will be delivered at once. A heavy plow was received for demonstrative purposes in the area. One tractor went to the Carson farm east of the city for sod plowing demonstrations this morning. Another demonstration is planned there tomorrow afternoon with invites extended. Demonstrations will continue Friday and Saturday of next week.

The local exemption board reports the classification of registrants begins Monday July 8. Men registered June 6 who are class one new and subject to immediate call will report to the physical examining board at 10 a.m. on July 16. S. Kahn a former city tailor now operating a Nelson business drove into a stone crossing post at First Street and Galent avenue yesterday morning. The crank and fenders were damaged but no one was hurt. A Dixon car driven by a woman went into a ditch five miles east with no injuries. A second car jumped a farm gate and entered a ditch but was pulled out with minor damage.
A noon Wednesday storm in Dix caused damage when a bolt split a huge black oak in the rear yard of Walter Preston. A wire connected the trees, and lightning zigzagged between them. The trees survive but the largest may need removal.
