Chinese Climbing Perch Travel but Don’t Climb
A historic study notes the climbing perch travels overland between pools in southeastern Asia and southern China. It uses spined gill covers and tail wiggling for leverage, but cannot climb trees. The fish has air chambers above each gill for air storage and can drown if surface access is blocked. It grows up to ten inches, is golden olive with a dark tail base, and shows no external sex differences.

Zinc Globes Carried Letters From Siege of Paris to Present
During the 1870 siege of Paris the German net halted ballons and zinc globes in the Seine carried letters to French lines. A river net at Villeneuve Saint Georges stopped the scheme, nearly forgotten until a fisherman found 3800 legible letters dated December 1870. The letters were restored to postal authorities and sent to recipients after over thirty years.

Coon Hunting Showcases Unique Sport and Bond with Dogs
The Detroit Free Press notes a strange appeal in coon hunting driven by the bond between hunter and dog. Hunters value sport over fur, favoring a prolonged chase, while condemning den-tree destruction and tree-climbing to extract coons. Rainy nights with fog boost scent for dogs at their best.
