Funeral services for Newt Madsen aged 7 likely a misprint were held Tuesday morning in Sebastopol. Interment was at Sebastopol cemetery under Evergreen lodge auspices. Miss Cecille Hicks and Miss Leonie Casabonne of Calpella returned to San Francisco on Monday after visiting relatives.
Ukiah Chamber of Commerce and merged merchants association face a budget dispute after two months of controversy over policy. The group votes to continue talks while pledges are returned and reissued, and George Wildberger resigns from the board saying he favors alignment with the merchant faction.
John Patterson, winner of the Future Farmer public speaking contest, returned to Anderson Valley after a trip that included Oak land Farm Credit administration headqu arters and Treasure Island with secretary treasurer Ruel Stickney. The California Nevada Arizona Utah group hosted Future Farmer guests with highlights: NBC broadcast on KGO, talks by Willard lis, contest winners, an Oakland banquet, and two busy days at the Exposition.
Jimmie Robie of Berkeley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Robie Jr., was selected along with two other boys to travel to Treasure Island to demonstrate wood carving in the Recreation building. The group, led by their instructor, showed visitors the department’s work and answered questions about woodcraft. Robie is grandson of P. J. Boring, a noted local contractor, and Mrs. Robie was Laura Boring.
University of California law professor Max Radin will speak on Social Justice as the third speaker in the Forum series. The talk is Friday at 8 in Veterans Memorial Hall, with Fulkerson in charge. Radin, born in Kempen Poland in 1880, has taught at UC since 1919 and holds multiple legal and scholarly memberships.
The Superior court trial of Guy Rockey drew a crowded, tense audience as fans lined the hallway and stairs. Court Reporter Hale Prather testified for the prosecution and was cross examined by the defense, with Prather recording his own testimony for the record. The defense then called 20 witnesses Wednesday afternoon with continued testimony planned Thursday morning.
Dr J H Hansen city health officer reports chicken pox and measles widespread among grammar school children in light form. Diphtheria epidemic is nearly over with two cases in quarantine expected to be released soon.
Iverson family grieves after nine year old Dale Iverson drowned Sunday afternoon in a creek by their home as he and six year old sister Betty played on a bridge. Walter and wife rushed to the scene but could not resuscitate him after three hours of artificial respiration amid a shallow water six to seven feet deep. Dale is survived by his parents two sisters and one brother.
February saw 40 deaths and 25 births in Mendocino County. Ukiah led deaths with 13, Fort Bragg 10, and other towns varied from 1 to 9. Births occurred in five cities, with two stillborn babies among the 25 total births reported.
The Young Democratic Club of Ukiah will hold its first organization meeting in the city hall on Tuesday March 14 at 7 30 p m. Monte Reid organizer of the club presides pro tem. Oakland Young Democrats will assist in organizing the 20 members already signed up.
The Talmage baseball club hosts a benefit dance this Saturday at Mendocino State Hospital from 9:00 p m to 1:00 a m. Oliver Pacini and his orchestra provide music. Proceeds aid new equipment for the ball team.
Miss Lulu Cook, a talented city singer, will guest on Budda's radio show Saturday evening March 11. Chosen as a winner in the Marlin Dell amateur contest she will sing They Say What Do You Know About Love and Deep in a Dream at eight o clock that night.
State Board of Equalization delayed ruling on Grape Products case and Kunzler matter after a Tuesday hearing segment. Referee MacDonald and Liquor Control head Phillips adjourned as no parties appeared. results expected in about two weeks. Evidence included complaints by Boonville residents over noise and alleged nuisance from Kunzler’s tavern.
The Talmage Baseball Club will host a second benefit dance at Mendocino State Hospital this Saturday evening with Oliver Pacini and his orchestra providing music. Proceeds fund new equipment for the Talmage Sluggers, per Manager Foggy Ottosen, and the event doubles as a warmup for Sunday's frat workout.
Kenneth E. Sullivan of Ukiah, manager of the state unemployment office, reported that Mendocino County paid out 13 705 83 to unemployed in January through unemployment insurance checks. A total of 5868 checks for 56 773 76 have been distributed locally since February 1938, with statewide January distributions totaling 2 627 004 10 across 278 609 checks. Local office placed 52 workers on jobs in January 1939, up 495% from 1938.
The 34th Rivers and Harbors Congress in Washington, D. C. listed flood control plans for Noyo and Eel rivers and for Noyo and Crescent City harbors among ten California projects for discussion. The congress acts as a clearing house to recommend national projects and is noted for weighing these recommendations closely.
Francis G. Prescott, field and claim agent for the State Department of Employment, toured the Ukiah office Wednesday to review area records and problems. He will return Thursday, per office manager Kenneth B. Sullivan.
Three Berkeley youths confessed in Petaluma to robbing Ferrell's hardware store in Boonville Wednesday afternoon. Sheriff Williams and Ferrell traced the trio from River Rest camp near Boonville to Cloverdale and Petaluma, where one of the stolen cars was abandoned and a confession of multiple northern California thefts obtained.
Donald Clark age 15 Jack Holdsworth age 15 and Bob Hiebner age 14 all of Berkeley confessed to robbing Ferrells hardware in Boonville and a spree that included stealing a Ford V eight in Berkeley on February 28 a Buick in San Jose a Rio Vista general store double robbery a Red Bluff robbery and a Ferrells store burglary ending in their arrest after spending Ferrells money at a Petaluma hotel.
Ukiah Rotarians heard Doug Montel explain behind the scenes sports broadcast techniques and betas. The Tidewater Associated Oil sportscaster described prep and handling, shared amusing onair encounters, and highlighted upcoming programs. Lon Gibson chaired, H P Dohring joined as a new member, with A L Harris presenting the ethics code. George Merk previewed the world’s greatest mystery program for next Tuesday.
Senator G. M. Biggar plans a new bill to exempt two tons of grapes per acre from the prorate. He notes northern counties, opposed to the prorate, would benefit as the average grape yield here is about two tons per acre. J L Rotluff of Potter Valley visited Ukiah on Thursday on business.
Walter Sandelin hosted a stag party Wednesday evening for 25 friends at his house to celebrate his birthday. After a seven o clock dinner the group played card games and the bones, ending a most enjoyable evening.
A seven pound boy was born to Mr and Mrs Walter Hoenig at Ukiah General Hospital Friday with Dr J J Kirwin in attendance. The child is the first in the family. Mother and son are doing well.
