Karl Holzhauser was elected president of the Mendocino County Grand Jury Association at the annual luncheon Wednesday at the Palace hotel. About 60 members and guests attended as retiring president Wayne Burke presided. Also serving as officers were Dan Drury C N Mortenson Katherine Foster and Mervin Graver with remarks from Judge W D L Held Charles Kasch and Hale McCowen.
Sacry, formerly of Willits, spends several weeks in the city visiting M. J. Lacry who comes from Phoenix Arizona where he is engaged in business.
City health officer Dr. J. H. Hansen warns residents along the California coast to avoid consuming mussels. He notes these shellfish can harbor a poisonous secretion that threatens human life and urges caution to protect public health.
Ukiah city purchases 70 ft of David property at Clay and School for 1800 and plans a one story firehouse and city police offices facing School. Rough plans submitted to architect Caulking Jr with plans to council soon. estimated build cost 12000 and site frontage 46 ft on School and 70 ft on Clay.
Ukiah lauds the Albertinum boys earnest request for work to raise funds for funeral expenses of 11 year old George Smith who was accidentally shot a week ago. The boys proposed to work for the money to ease sorrow and show appreciation for the Sisters but Sister Superior withheld consent. Ukiah responds generously as boys are seen working to defray the expenses of the popular playground favorite.
Funeral services for J. J. Newman 87 father of J. G. Newman of Potter Valley were held in Eureka. Newman died in a Eureka hospital after an illness and had been living with his daughter Mrs. R. H. Jenkins in Arcata after his wife died three years ago. He suffered a broken hip recently and remained in the Eureka hospital until his death.
Arnold Johnson sues California Western Railroad and Union Lumber for 25000 dollars in damages plus 608 dollars for loss of his right arm and other injuries. He alleges the logging train careless operation caused him to be run over, resulting in the arm loss a fractured hip scalp lacerations and multiple head face and neck abrasions. The suit was filed by Preston and Gibson.
The council passed an ordinance at the last meeting with a clause authorizing power shutoff to buildings where machinery interferes with radio reception.
M D Gray Sr of Union Lumber in Fort Bragg was designated foreman of the new Grand Jury sworn in Wednesday by Judge W D L Held in Superior court. Nineteen members were drawn from a 30 person panel, with names including Winnie Reilly and others from Fort Bragg Willits Hopland Philo Boonville Mendocino Covelo Laytonville and area communities.
Everett Gerald Hilson twenty died at the scene and Leo McCinley eighteen, critically injured, after a collision on Redwood highway south of Laney. Dr Rex Frizzell of Pasadena escaped harm as his car hit the Hilson McGinley vehicle, McGinley under Dr Raymond Babcock care with cranial injuries and possible fractured vertebrae. Deputy Coroner Beverly Broadus and Captain Austin Rawlies investigated the crash.
Dr J E Gardner addressed Rotarians describing conditions on the Malay peninsula where he practiced medicine for years before returning home. He presented his subject with entertaining instruction. Fred Dickey was program chairman. William Cummings of Eureka visited. No meeting next Tuesday due to holiday.
Miss Betty Crispin, who suffered a badly scalded right leg stepping into a mill furnace in Anderson Valley about three weeks ago, is improving nicely. Mrs. Harry Nichola has cared for the injury under Dr. D. C. Oakleaf of Healdsburg. Miss Crispin is the granddaughter of Mrs. W. L. Witherell.
Kansas agronomist Robert Brooks Jr. joins the Ukiah Soil Conservation Service office where he will work with Kenneth Wade as part of the local agronomy team.
The annual Finnish Brotherhood picnic takes place Saturday and Sunday at the Charles Lindgrove in Redwood Valley with guests expected from across the state.
Alfred Johnson 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. J S Johnson, died from a fractured skull after being struck by equipment belt while operating a pumping engine on his father's ranch in Ukiah valley. He died at a local hospital hours after the 8:45 am incident. Survived by parents, three brothers and four sisters. Classmate pallbearers. Funeral Friday at Eversole Mortuary.
A rattlesnake with ten rattles was seen on Ukiah streets Thursday morning. It crossed Highland Avenue near Perkins Street and was dispatched by Gordie Gibson who has encountered rattlers before. Gibson reported he was heading to the soda spring when he saw the snake and he displayed the rattler as proof of conquest.
C. W. Stone of Redwood Valley who died in Placerville on June 7 left an estate valued above $10,000 to his widow Madge A. Stone named executrix. A probate petition was filed for Mrs. Stone via Mannon & Brazier. The estate includes $7,500 in stocks and bonds plus property in Redwood Valley and Kern County.
Congratulations go to Mr and Mrs Henry Cureton of Concord California on the birth of a son at Martinez Hospital June 25 The child Henry Oliver Cureton weighed seven and a half pounds Mrs Cureton formerly Dorothy McClellan Ukiah teacher Mr Cureton employed by Associated Oil at Avon Grandmothers are Mrs Mary McClellan and Mrs Sara Cureton The late Judson McClellan and Willam Cureton are grandfathers
Thrilling three day Pow Wow and 12th District Agricultural Fair in Ukiah features the World Model T Derby announced after two fair board meetings. Forrest Hughes, new board member and race driver, leads the derby with a fast Pacific coast track attracting drivers from multiple regions. The three day program opens with a bicycle race from Vichy Springs, a big parade led by Princess Yo Knayo, Indian dance, log sawing, horse show, kiddies parade, a grape box derby, and two street dances with the Californians. The Shell Oil Co plans a free firework display, and Joyland Carnival brings its show to Main Street. Complete fair program to follow in next local papers.
Independence Day will be celebrated at Mendocino State hospital on Saturday July 1. A parade and games start the day at 8 45 a m with a parade to the athletic field fed by the Little Dutch Band. The afternoon program opens at 12 30 with music by the band and an oration by Hon Toland McGettigan district attorney of Sonoma county.
K. D. Reynolds, a Willits photographer, will lead a staff of officers for the Willits Lions Club at a Wednesday evening ladies night. The staff includes Fred Holland as vice president Allan Lacry as secretary treasurer Henry Hach as lion tamer W. D. Ford as tail twister and Leo Conard and Dick Buechtel as directors.
Willits in Mendocino County lines up a three day July 2 to 4 program with parades dances fireworks and a featured rodeo. Cow waddies bronc riding steer riding calf roping Brahma riding and trick roping award cash prizes and add points toward American and International championships. Anetta S whe anl old women horse racers showcase speed and daring, as Willits fire department sponsors the event drawing thousands to the town’s western celebration.
Mr and Mrs Andrew Wilson departed Thursday morning for Pullman Washington and Moscow Idaho to visit Mrs Wilsons sons William and John ODonnell. No definite return date has been set.
City health officer Dr J H Hansen reports Mrs Esther Lowe’s home under quarantine as Jackie Lowe tests positive for diphtheria. No other cases are present in Ukiah at this time.
Hi Yum Whisker Club members report a jail missing from in front of the court house. I Yum detectives locate the calaboose at the city dump. A posse and fire department members are arrested and to stand trial Saturday night before Judge Newell Rea. Public invited.
Horatio Colburn of Briceland Humboldt county died in Ukiah. The body was shipped to Fort Bragg for funeral services Friday at the Cannery Funeral Parlor. He was brother to Samuel Colburn of Caspar and uncle to Madeline and Henry Colburn of Caspar.
Edwin Castagna librarian of the Ukiah publiclibrary was appointed chairman of the San Francisco Portola district of the California Library Association Junior Members Round Table at the librarians conference in San Francisco last week. The appointment was made by Mrs. Anne Leigh librarian of the Arcadia public library and newly elected president of the California Junior Members Round Table.
Philip Joseph was the guest of his parents Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Joseph on Saturday and Sunday, enjoying time with his family.
Henry J. Churchman 80, Safeway employee, died of a heart attack on a fishing trip on the Eel River near Blue Slides after climbing a steep incline. Companioned by Christy of Safeway, Churchman collapsed about 10:30 p m Sunday and died en route to Ukiah. survived by wife Elizabeth and two daughters Wilma and Patricia. Funeral arrangements pending with Cleland Schamber Funeral Home.
John Kallio, 40, a county woodsman for three years, died from a brain concussion after a fall down stairs at a Navarro boarding house in the early hours Saturday. A Finnish native who came to the United States 40 years ago, he is mourned with funeral arrangements by Grace T. Can narr Funeral Home. Sister Mrs Markkula of Fort Bragg survives.
