First One Man Atlantic Crossing In Small 30 Foot Boat
Alain J. Gerbault Laval France 1923 sails solo across the Atlantic in a 30 foot craft from Gibraltar on April 5 reaching New York September 17 after 142 days of storms hunger and fever. He plans to cross the Pacific next and vows to push on despite dire conditions and fatigue. Gerbault 29 famed French tennis player and former aviator recalls daring sea voyage as veterans hail it as one of the era’s boldest feats. He survived a gale that smashed his deck and left him unconscious for two days and sailed on with a makeshift rig and stubborn resolve. He refused a rescue from a liner when near New York and kept moving toward land believing he would endure. He describes the voyage as a sailor’s life and says the sea is home.
