Arthur Brisbane surveys political speculation as President Coolidge remains noncommittal and Hughes Mellon return from Europe. He contrasts old age fears with a candidacy outlook, notes a Smithsonian weather project in Africa, and mocks stock swindles while urging restraint and sacrifice.
Harold Cashmore 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Cashmore of Dillon, died after a 25 foot fall from a pole when a wire touched a high tension line during aerial work. He had planned to attend Montana State College and was a Beaverhead High School football center, DeMolay, and active church member. Survived by five brothers and parents. the incident occurred while wiring to receive Dempsey Tunney fight signals.
Ethel Jean Davis and Bee Forsyth were badly bruised and cut when a rock gave way on a steep ascent near the river road west of the city. Miss Davis fell backward, pulling Forsyth with her, as companions Jane Herndon and Mabel Coet ticher watched. Mrs. Patterson and her family assisted the girls to town. Dr. W. H. Stephan treated them.
Albert Dullenty of Dillon was committed to the state sanatorium after a mental unbalance diagnosis at Billings. Overwork and a nervous breakdown were cited as factors following his brief Worden school principal assignment and recent return to summer school.
A. W. Stephenson pilot of the Waco No. 10 owned by Emerson Hughes of Dillon was delayed by storms from New York to Chicago then to Misoula and missed the class B race to Spokane. He spent the night in Misoula and planned to resume toward Spokane the next morning. Two Montana entrants C C McMahon of Miles City and R I Jackson of Missoula reached Missoula too late to continue.
Clyde Kudor died Wednesday evening in a Los Angeles hospital after complications from an appendicitis operation about a week earlier. He had many Dillon friends and was well known in the city. His wife Fern Andrus and Harry Andrus were with him. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
Undersheriff Carl Hartwig arrested Clarence Everson Tuesday at noon after a complaint that he cashed worthless checks and displayed a gun at the First National bank. Everson is jailed on a misdemeanor charge and is sought for issuing worthless checks in Butte. He did not have a gun at the time, Hartwig said.
Beaverhead board of county commissioners met in special session at 10:00 a.m. September 17, 1927 to open bids and let contracts for fencing work. Details continued on page eight.
Salt Lake City deputy sheriff Fred Lee took Warner into custody after Warner was arrested days ago by Sheriff W. C. Orr who is wanted on a wife desertion charge in a local case.
Bewehead county ships thousands of lambs daily to meet strong eastern and western demand. About 70 000 head are expected this fall at roughly 11 cents a pound, 70 pound average, netting growers over 500 000 dollars. Local and outside buyers compete in Dillon and nearby towns.
Increased traffic from the south raises possibility that the Oregon Short Line may double-track the Dillon to Butte route. R A Pierce, OS L general superintendent, says the idea is under consideration but any decision would come from New York. He notes ballast work from Divide to Silver Bow will be finished by mid October and the roadbed will be ready for winter.
Miss Nilah Green daughter of Mrs Elizabeth Green of Dillon was married in Butte last Sunday afternoon to James Davis a well known young man of the Mining city The ceremony was held by Rev S P Martin and attended by intimate friends Mrs Davis a Beaverhead county high school graduate entered Murray hospital graduating with the class of nurses in 1927 and has since worked at the hospital The groom works at the Tramway mine After a honeymoon to northwest points the couple will reside in Butte
Anabell Hartwig woke her cousin and brother when smoke filled a room in the early hours. A short in the wiring caused a small fire that burned several pieces of furniture. insurance covers all losses.
The will of the late Martin Barrett was filed for probate in the district court Saturday morning. Executors named include Robert M. Barrett Jack Barrett W A Graeter and John Collins.
A once barren Dillon dryland now hosts golf, drawing 60 members and daily play. The upcoming Sunday afternoon tournament for men and women features 68 entrants, with 1:00 starting times and 10 minute pairings, as detailed by the organizing committee.
The American Legion post will host the Mining District Conference in Dillon on October 8 with about 200 ex service members from Beaverhead and 80 from Anaconda planning attendance. District Commander Piney Maxwell presides. Eugene Bond, Joe Fuller, and Tom Gilbert lead arrangements. An evening parade and Armistice Day events, including a football game, banquet, dance and fireworks, are planned with drum and bugle corps from Butte and Anaconda featured.
