Electors must register before Friday as a last minute rush nears the county clerk's office. Since the 1930 general elections, registrations passed the thousand mark with totals over 3 700 expected to rise by Friday. Cancelations from nonvoting and other causes have reduced the net gain since 1930 to about 160.
Beaverhead post of the American Legion held a large turnout at city hall last Thursday but met in the police station due to a city council session. Commander Louis Schmittroth outlined labor regulations for highway oiling, announced the clubhouse sale at the Boy Scout camp, and said a membership drive would begin immediately. He will appoint a committee to organize an Armistice Day program inviting neighboring Legion posts. Attorney and Mrs. H G Rodgers visited Henry Rodgers Jr in Boise Idaho last weekend.
Veteran anglers remark on trophies shown at Cash market window. A 15 pound rainbow trout claimed as caught by Mrs W D Ross and Mrs Louis Schmittroth during a Hidden Lake trip with their husbands. The fish is the largest by a local angler in years. Also notes prior standout catches and church excavation by Carl Mast.
Lee Jones and Guy Jones, ranchmen of Centennial valley, are held in custody during an investigation of grand larceny. They’re suspected of branding cattle owned by Poindexter and Orr. no definite charges filed yet by County Attorney T. E. Gilbert leading the inquiry.
Mrs. Mary Jane Minter 78 died at Barrett hospital about 3 30 pm Monday after a brief illness. Born in Kentucky she lived there most of life but spent 14 15 years in Dillon. Surviving daughters Mrs John Neal of Dillon Mrs Robert Boatman Monida and Mrs Robert Rose Bryantsville Kentucky a son Walter Minter Marysville Kentucky a sister Mrs A L Chandler Washington state on her way to Dillon Funeral services were held Wednesday at Brundage chapel and the body shipped to Bryantsville Kentucky for burial.
At a Beaverhead county meeting Red Cross officials outlined 188 000 paid in from Montana and 736 000 spent statewide last year. P K Betts said a survey will gauge this year s needed aid as relief work plans include community organization and supply distribution with an October 10 roll call and 650 memberships targeted in Beaverhead.
A Washington dispatch cited Dillon as a candidate for a new federal post office under a relief program. The plan envisions about 100 000 dollars for Dillon, aimed at employing local workers, with work likely after contract procedures are completed. Dillon was the only Montana city named.
Whitehall defeated Dillon 12 to 0 on a windy dusty afternoon. Wiley and McGall scored the touchdowns in the second and final quarters, with failed extra points. Dec Beal refereed as the Beaver passing attack stalled and most action stayed in Whitehall territory.
Frank A. Hazelbaker, Republican candidate for governor, outlines party platform at the Montana Republican convention in Helena. Delegates pledge fealty to Republican principles and commend the state and nation to sound, progressive policies, lauding the Hoover era and party records in Congress.
Seven Butte men pleaded guilty in justice court before Judge George Opp to hunting on a federal game preserve. Each was fined 25 dollars, remitted by court at the request of witnesses Deputy Game Warden Charles Price and Forest Ranger Swan. More defendants were summoned for arraignment as signs marked preserve boundaries clarified the restriction.
The new market in Dillon opened today at 324 East Glendale Street. Deputy and proprietor Jack announced the venture, portraying a neat, steady start for the business and its Dillon butcher supply.
Dillon volunteer fire department invites the public to a free dance at City Hall auditorium next Saturday at 9 pm with music by the Orange Crush orchestra. A banquet at the Metlen hotel will honor active firemen and their ladies that evening.
Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, Democratic presidential candidate, stopped in the city for several hours Monday morning. His train was sidetracked between 8:30 and 7:30, though not on his schedule. About 100 Beaverhead democrats and some Republicans later motored to Butte to hear him, disappointed by faulty loudspeaking gear. Harry J. Andrus and Dr. F. M. Poindexter were among attendees. Butte gave a royal reception and thousands heard him.
Archie G. Gauchay known as Granny, a longtime Dillon resident and Nevada stockman born in Annabelle Utah, died suddenly at a Reno hospital after an injury contributed to his passing. He came to Dillon in 1911 worked at Poindexter Orr ranch before WWI and later lived in Nevada. Wes Mares of the Dillon Meat Co. traveled to Helena for business last Friday.
The Rotary club listening to Rev. Orval Schmidt on Lincoln as “A Lincoln Today” heard a talk on moral courage reasoning and action. He warned about self-serving blocs and urged Americans to call forth great leaders to meet supreme needs. Fay Erwin described the meeting with apt citations while T E Luebben gave a story and Joe Wedum chaired.
Beaverhead county reports no hunting accidents during a three day season with many hunters in the field. Camps near opening time and optimism for October 1 duck season at noon. Dillon hunters varied luck with sage hens and grouse. several locals hit the limit of five birds. Traffic to Sheep Creek basin set new opening records with increased turnout from Butte and Anaconda areas. A P Williams of Alder attends to business in Dillon.
Dr. Horace E. Wheeler is named instructor in mathematics and science at the State Normal College. He holds BA and MA degrees from Stanford and a PhD from the University of Chicago. Autumn quarter starts next Monday with Saturday and Monday registration.
