Town Fair Sheriff Raids Three Gambling Joints

Sheriff M. D. Gist with Under Sheriff Geo. Dart and Deputy Bill Calloway raided three gambling dens between 10 and 12 last Saturday. Jack Lavelle Al Morrison and Dan Courtney ran the games. five tables and chips were seized while cards and cash were taken. All three proprietors were arrested and pleaded not guilty. preliminary trials set for Sept. 19. L. K. Adams and E. H. Brundage sent a boat to Armstead, then floated Beaverhead river duck hunting, arriving Dillon at 7 PM.

Miss Alma Thorpe became Mrs. Spencer Harwood in a simple Wednesday wedding at the home of Hon. and Mrs. E O Selway with Rev S D Hooker officiating. The couple, who will reside in Spencer Idaho, followed by a wedding dinner and farewell train departure for their new home.

Republican Timber Named for Dillon County Offices

County Democratic Delegates Named and Market Closed

County democratic primaries elected delegates and alternates for the Dillon county convention to be held tomorrow afternoon in Dillon. Dillon north and south listed delegates and alternates for the party, while Deputy and Innes meat market partnership dissolved with Deputy closing Washington street shop and moving to Montana street. Innes stays on as blockman.

Pioneer Joseph Shineberger Dies After Illness

Beaverhead County mourns Joseph Shineberger a longtime settler who arrived in 1859 and helped build the community dying at Bedrock after months of infirm old age. His funeral at the Masonic hall saw strong attendance with Rev S D Hooker delivering the sermon and interment in Mountain View cemetery under Masonic rites.

The First National Bank supplied a county wool table with commentary on Beaverhead's industry. More sheep shorn, but lighter fleece reduced revenue. higher expenses and lower lamb mutton prices worsened profits, leaving many producers not earning and some near losses.

Montana State Normal College Opens With Large Enrollment

The Montana State Normal College opened this week with enrollment over 105 students. A new building and better equipment promise a successful year. The list shows students from Anaconda, Butte, Helena, Dillon, Missoula, Billings, and many other towns with names of nineteen counties and cities across the state. Miss Carson is away on institute work in Great Falls and Havre and will return Monday.

Grain Damaged by Hail at Big Hole

The hail storm last Thursday damaged C. H. Strowbridge’s grain, with barley and oats hit hardest while rye fared better and is ready for harvest. Strowbridge, a persistent grower in this basin, vows to continue despite the loss. Also, Beaverhead resident Robert N. Gray bought the Old Barich ranch at Point of Rocks through Price’s real estate. Barich will move to Wyoming with his family and work prospects.

Dry Land Farmers Plan Steam Plow Breakthrough

Norman Holden reports a strong dry land crop near Dillon with 26 bushels per acre in wheat and 40 sacks per acre in potatoes. He and about eight to ten ranchers plan to buy a steam plow to break 1,000 acres on the beach next year, banking on the Campbell system proving a great success.

Montana Baptist convention set in Dillon next week

The Montana Baptist convention meets at the First Baptist church in Dillon from Wednesday September 9 to Sunday September 13. Noted speakers include C A Wooddy D D Portland Oregon and I C Barnes D D Chicago with other ministers from the United States and state leaders present. Rev A F Colver will be ordained Friday evening September 11 after an examining board meets that afternoon.
