Half of the Money for Ellen Stone Ransom Placed
Nearly half the funds needed to ransom Ellen Stone, the missionary, have been placed with Kidder, Peabody & Co. The amount is 45,543.40 dollars in cash and 7,500 dollars in pledges. The firm sent 35,000 dollars to the state department for forwarding to consular agents. Officials of the American Board of Congregational Missions met and decided against paying a ransom to avoid encouraging brigandage. The state department will take charge of the ransom and collections will continue while Miss Stone remains missing or until news of her death.
