Sun River irrigation canal boosts valley farming prospects
Helena Journal notes the Sun River system led by engineer Charles McIntyre features the Peton canal twenty five miles long with a bottom width of eight feet and top width of fifteen feet carrying two and a half feet of water. The immense Benton Lake reservoir spans eight by four miles and powers a vast network irrigating lands along the Missouri River to Fort Benton. The project, worth millions, aims to irrigate about 250,000 acres and attract hundreds of settlers to Montana's rich farming belt.

Last evening a double tragedy occurred at a second hand store on First street where GM Hoffchitz kept shop. The father and his son, both found dead in the sleeping room with a gunshot wound, the son also shot but dying soon after. The event is attributed to the father’s temporary fits or mania, with no definite motive established.
