A summary of Beaverhead county board of commissioners meetings in March notes Commissioner Montgomery was absent. Officials reviewed treasurer clerk and recorder reports, appointed several justices of the peace, and approved many bills. The discussion touched printing costs, a printer’s bill, and a contentious telephone bill with private charges, ending with claims for road and public works and public notices.
Special correspondence from Alice reports the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Blair with a large reception at W. G. Blair's home and an elegant supper by Mrs. John Shesser. It notes other town events including cattle shipments, ice business, new stores planned by Horace McIntyre, and varied health and travel updates across the area.
Special correspondence notes John Ward of Dillon visited friends on Red Rock while William Proper from Medicine Lodge planned a Dillon visit. Cattle traded from John Brenner of Horse Prairie. Ben Taylor, Mr Craner and Mr and Mrs Rice appeared in Dillon and Grayling visits. Local sheepmen in southern Beaverhead oppose a bounty bill cutting coyotes to two dollars and raising wolves to five, arguing wolves pose greater threat.
In Newark Michigan during the Civil War a ball struck G B Steadman causing a long illness. Bucklin’s Arnica Salve claimed to heal 20 years of suffering and to cure cuts bruises burns boils felons corns skin eruptions. Central Pharmacy advertises 25 cents per box with a cure guaranteed.
Special Correspondence from Comet Mountain reports the worst winter storm in years with about ten feet of snow and high winds. The east side piles drifted snow threaten the Magnet tunnel house and mining machinery, risking abandonment despite copper boom rumors.
Mr. R. P. Olivia of Barcelona spends winters in Aiken. He credits Electric Bitters with curing back head pains and weak nerves. He proclaims the tonic restores vigor and treats liver and kidney trouble, with each bottle guaranteed at 50 cents and sold by Central Pharmacy.
Ditto message from March 8 1809 lists letters remaining uncalled for at the post office. If not claimed within 80 days the letters will be sent to the dead letter office.
