Governor Poindexter Visits Dillon After Washington Stop

Governor Joseph B. Poindexter of Hawaii spent a weekend in Dillon visiting his brothers Dr. F. M. and E. L. Poindexter and friends. He traveled from Washington to San Francisco then Honolulu, meeting E. L. Poindexter and E. B. Roe in Dillon. Poindexter, a longtime Dillon resident, served as county and city attorney and district judge before becoming a federal judge in Hawaii and returning to private practice prior to his Roosevelt appointment.

Mrs Susan McBride Dies in Portland Former Dillon Resident

Word reaches Dillon of the May 26 death of Mrs. Susan McBride in Portland Oregon a former Dillon resident who lived with the Barretts for about 15 years She was born 75 years ago in Shelbyville Missouri and came to Montana 256 years ago Surviving are her son Mate of Spokane a daughter Mrs Mabel Collier of Portland three sisters and four brothers The body was sent to Shelbyville for burial beside her husband Also Ned Saunders and Willard Shaffner returned from Helena as delegates to the Montana Conference of Royal Arch Masons

Brothers of William Cannon Search in Centennial Valley

George and H Cannon of Hammond Indiana arrived in Dillon to spend a week in the Centennial valley seeking the remains of William Cannon who vanished late last October. The missing man is tied to the death of neighboring rancher Robert V Allen who was found shot near his cabin. Call any leads to local authorities.

Cushing Couple Celebrates Fortieth Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Edward Cushing celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary with a dinner party for twenty at their Dillon residence. They were married forty years ago at the Schuyler ranch north of the city and have since built a wide circle of friends in Dillon.

Misa Phyllis Johnson of Big Timber Montana won first in Montana in the eleventh annual meat study contest. The entry "Meat in the Low Cost Diet" argues meat fits all budgets while supplying protein iron phosphorus and vitamins and adds flavor to economical meals.

Mary Simons to Graduate at Illinois College

Mary Simons daughter of Mrs T J and the late Rev Simons of Dillon will graduate at Illinois College on Monday June 11 during the 101st commencement. She studied English and attended Montana State Normal College before joining Illinois College where she is active in music. The college, founded in 1829 by Yale alumni, counts William Jennings Bryan among its notable alumni. Rev Walter Amos Morgan will give the commencement address on The Tragedy of Muted Voices.

Rural pupils awarded state eighth grade diplomas

Thirty seven students from county rural schools earned diplomas after passing the state eighth grade exams. Top scorer Mary Sweeney led Nicholia with 90 average. a long list of finalists from Grant to Wisdom followed, plus 26 seventh graders succeeding in hygiene and geography tests. Perfect attendance noted for many pupils across districts with a long roster of names and schools.

Dillon Gunners to Defend State Title in Helena Trap Meet

The Dillon Gun club will defend the state team title and several individual titles at the 41st annual state trap shoot in Helena next Friday through Sunday. Defenders include E. W. Renfro and Roy Forrester, with past champions such as Joe Latimer and Virgil Rothrock among returning competitors. The event follows Dillon’s telegraphic shoot victory, and rules of the Amateur Trapshooting Association will govern the tournament. The Dillon Country Club clubhouse was recently rededicated with a housewarming and a phonograph entertainment.

Hazelbaker Seeks Lieutenant Governor Run in Montana

Montana candidates eye a July 17 primary to fill governor and lieutenant governor after a state supreme court hearing. I A Hazelbaker, a Beaverhead businessman and former district Rotary governor, seeks the lieutenant post, with Cooney acting as governor amid Erickson’s resignation. The secretary of state has yet to accept filings as lawyers press for a mandamus to compel acceptance.
