Daring Union Scout Charley Marsh Defied Death at Castle Thunder
A 1862 Civil War tale profiles Charley Marsh, a young Union scout who burned a rear bridge near Lee’s army, was captured, and escaped by seizing papers from a drunken guard. He bluffed a deadly fate at Castle Thunder, survived four months as a prisoner, and later rejoined the war effort before a secret-service career postwar.
