Columbia Defeats Constitution in Newport Yacht Race
In Newport Rhode Island on July 13 the Columbia topped the Constitution by two minutes 19 seconds in corrected time while Independence, despite losing a topmast at the start, delivered a bold showing. The Boston yacht, hampered by gear loss, sailed bravely and might have won but for the accident. The four contests reveal mixed merits with Columbia leading on reaches and Constitution faster in windward legs in light air. Yesterday’s race ran in a 16 knot wind.
