A year end look at Beaverhead County's 1925 progress across business ranching and professions. Key events include new officials at the courthouse, fires and migrations, school completions, Rotary and legion activities, sports tournaments, and notable local incidents with dates from January to March.
Mortality in Beaverhead county fell to 59 deaths in the year down from 62 in 1924 with most deaths from heart disease. There were four personal crisis reports, three accidental deaths and one homicide from an unidentified body found near Daly's Spur on Sept 9. Names listed include Mrs. Sarah Ann McIntosh, Mrs. Ruby M. Adams, John Hull, Mrs. Maria Annie Else, Mrs. Emma Connolly, George Turcott, Elmer Lutz, and Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Hughes.
The Normal College dedicated its new library building with a program led by the Wrangler's Club. President S. E. Davis and Dr. F. H. Garver spoke on the library's scope, 18000 volumes, and state support. Pearl S. Smith and Frank Eliel outlined civic impact and history.
Duke Potter and Rutie Reading of Ririe Idaho were misled by a friend's tale that Beaverhead County seat was in Monida and set out to marry there. After a delayed search they were driven by Justin Brundage to Dillon where Fred Rife issued a license and Judge Phillips married them before catching the southbound train.
Sheriff Dan Mooney and officers surprised a holiday crowd at the Pheasant soft drink parlor last Friday evening and arrested Hans Johnson, an employee, confiscating several bottles of liquor. Johnson pleaded not guilty in justice court and was bound over to the district court on a $500 bond. On Wednesday, information charged him with three counts of violating prohibition laws and set bonds at $1,000.
Monte Melton son of Mr and Mrs George Melton recovered from an operation on an infected leg at Barrett hospital. The 8 year old boy, treated by Dr Kistler of Butte, was reported out of danger and on the road to recovery after last Saturday surgery.
Albert Roloff and Jim McCracken were arrested on vagrancy charges during the holidays. They were arraigned Monday morning and pleaded guilty. Each was fined 25 dollars by Judge Phillips but could not pay the amount.
Beav erhead County issued 79 marriage licenses in 1925 up from 62 in 1924. Idaho led with 29 licenses, September had 11, March 3, and 29 couples were newly married. The oldest groom was 60 and the youngest 21, with an average groom age of 41 and brides averaging 23. The life story of Ellen Lovell, longtime Dillon resident, noted for philanthropy, death occurred after 50 years in Beaverhead County. Funeral services were held at St James Episcopal Church.
The Friday night city hall dance by the fire department drew a large crowd and raised a substantial sum. Members praised Dillon’s public support and plan to buy needed equipment after the new year.
The Electric Shop Burles and Taylor relocate from Sebree street to the former millinery building beside the Western Union Telegraph Co. office. Extensive changes are under way to create an up-to-date electric shop. Neighbors welcomed to Montana street.
James A. Grady, heavyweight prisoner at the county jail, pleaded guilty in district court last Wednesday to attempting to obtain money under false pretenses and was sentenced by Judge H. G. Rodgers to five to ten years in the state prison. He was taken to Deer Lodge last Monday by Undersheriff Frank Kellum. Francis Gelhaus hosted a stag party on South Washington street Tuesday night with pinochle games at two tables and refreshments served.
