Woodchuck Etymology Traced From Native Terms
The word woodchuck is not built from wood and chuck but derives from native terms such as wejack woodshaw or woodschoock used by Hudson Bay traders. Hunters and traders adopted the name, with Cree otchek and Chippewa otchig influencing the shift. The fur trade lists groundhog skins as woodchucks per the bureau of American ethnology.
