Dillon man Fred Rife reports 149 marriage licenses issued in the past year, a likely new record despite a “low mood year.” The year shows peaks in June and October with many couples from Idaho. January through December counts are listed, followed by a long roster of couples married in Dillon in 1982.
Joe Gunidia and his wife were found shot dead on their bedroom floor at a Divide inn. The sheriff said the man apparently killed his wife then shot himself, after years of reported ill will. Their 12 year old daughter found them. The couple had run a Divide road house for five years.
Professor Robert E. Albright spends the holiday season in Washington D C working on a Montana history research project with access to the State Department War Department Interior Department and Library of Congress. Montana Normal College graduates fill teaching posts in 11 counties with 1041 teachers in 1982 83. 958 since 1921.
Beaverhead county Beavers opened the basketball season with three away games. They beat Three Forks 28 21, lost to Livingston 30 29, and fell 24 15 to Capital City team Helena. Dillon fans hope for district honors after a promising start.
Dillon drew a peaceful holiday message with family gatherings and neighbor visits. Dances hosted by the volunteer fire department and Beaverhead post of the Legion drew crowds, churches held special services, carolers visited Barrett hospital and homes, and toys were distributed to needy families by fire department and Boy Scouts. No accidents or arrests were reported. Children enjoyed a Monday dance at city hall hosted by L D S church ladies.
Senator elect Geo M Melton and Representative Joe Melten spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club in the Andrus dining room detailing pending Montana legislation and upcoming legislative issues. Earl Vance of Great Falls, National Parks Airways pilot, attended as a guest and spoke briefly after a forced landing due to the storm.
The Dillon Choral Club will present a New Year’s concert at the Baptist church next Sunday evening. Public invited. Program includes Joy to the World Prayer Perfect To Sing Awhile Trees Hark the Herald Angels Sing It Came Upon a Midnight Clear Cherry Tree Carol Coventry Carol Now the Crimson Sun America Oh Little Town of Bethlehem Silent Night Now the Day Is Over. The Cherry Tree Carol is noted as one of the oldest in the world.
E. W. Renfro of Dell, world champion live third shot, was named again to the All American trapshooting team in an Associated Press announcement. He ranked eighth in Jimmy Robinson’s Amateur Trapshooting Association selections, after winning the Montana flyer championship and collecting numerous medals and cups.
Beaverhead county residents respond strongly to the Red Cross drive this year. The local chapter raised $20 more than last year while sending $38 less to the national organization. The national chapter keeps only 50 cents of every dollar for small subscriptions, with the remainder remaining locally.
Notices by Frank Bulger secretary announce the Dillon Country Club annual meeting in the city hall council chambers on Monday evening Jan 9 at 8 o clock. Business of importance will be discussed and all stock holders unable to attend are urged to be represented.
Beaverhead county records for 1932 show 78 deaths and 75 births. Girls outnumbered boys with 39 daughters and 386 sons born. January through October saw ten births in several months, while deaths rose by 12 from 1931. Violent deaths occurred including three murders and a shooting, with heart disease as a leading cause. Ancestral names and dates appear in a long listing of individuals.
After New Year breaks, four new county officials take office and six re-elected officials begin new terms. Edgar Rife, O M Best, J E Kelly, and Nell Doyle are new officials. Best is a Republican. George M Melton represents Beaverhead in the state senate and Joe Mellen is re-elected to the house. Several officials including Sheriff W C Orr and Clerk of Court Fred Rife are re‑elected. Miss Mathews begins March 1.
Mrs. W. W. Hawkins presided as county chair man of the Christmas seal drive reporting a total of 115 dollars raised. The sale ran since Thanksgiving with booths at the post office and two banks. Miss Gladys Garr supervised rural areas and proceeds go to the Montana Tuberculosis association.
Mrs JL B Coler formerly Miss Louise Freeman registrar at Montana State Normal college died in Marysville Missouri after a brief pneumonia illness. She lived in Dillon about five years and moved to Missouri last March when married. Survived by husband, her parents and two brothers.
