Poultry Housing and Feed Based on Soil Type
Poultry thrives on well drained light loam suitable for grass. Very light sandy soils require purchased green feed. heavy clays hinder health and drainage. Long stationary houses save steps, while colony systems allow free range. Breeding stock needs ample range. market layers do well on small areas with good management. Colony houses placed 100 hens each, 200 250 feet apart to protect grass. In winter, colony houses can be gathered to reduce labor.
