Montana Experiment Station expert urges careful planning to weather feed shortages. Advice focuses on drastic herd reduction, retaining proven breeding stock, selling dry cows and calves, and prioritizing cost efficient ewes and cows to preserve long term herd value.
The article urges stockmen to carefully evaluate outside grazing opportunities for Montana stock, noting land quality varies widely from worthless to good. It warns of heavy winter feeding needs, high travel costs, and potential losses, advising return home in spring and stressing the 1 1 3 rate was to aid returning stock rather than promote long shipments.
Misses Agnes and Gladys Raw of Grant spent the week end at Dillon. Mrs. R. R. Given left for Ohio to spend the winter with her folks. Mr. and Mrs. W. Churchill have given up the Grant hotel. Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Cook take charge. Massie Sorensen and Kenzler return from overseas. Kenzler bought a roadster. Kau visitors from Butte spend the week end. Roy Given accompanied his wife to Butte. Mrs. Bermuth sprained her ankle. Hoveys spent Sunday with Mrs. Mary Given before her eastward departure. Amasia Cox and brother Thomas visit Dillon for a few days.
Smoke from nearby forest fires drifts over the city for several days, with thick nights making breathing uncomfortable. Winds from the south and west have largely kept the haze at bay during most hours.
A forest office signs for forest fighters and a number of men have been secured to deploy to the district most in need of their services.
Washington reports Rep. Simeon D. Fess of Ohio outlines plans to curb high living costs. Proposals include boosting dollar purchasing power, curbing food exports, winding down war programs, selling war materials, cutting waste, reducing the federal payroll, and enforcing profiteering penalties under existing laws. He urges return to peacetime norms and regulated transport if needed.
Miss Marion Novak died in Dillon after about a week of heart disease. She was 32, a native of St Paul, and had lived here a year with her sister Mrs. Chris Olsen. Survived by her parents three sisters and one brother all in St Paul except Mrs Olsen. Remains shipped to St Paul with Mr and Mrs Chris Olsen Mrs Cook and Miss Rose Novak.
August 16 crop report by Montana Commissioner Chas D. Greenfield notes light yields but good quality with alfalfa third cuttings in progress. Rain aids ranges, livestock shipments reduce. Counties report varying results: Richland early corn promising. Prairie oats and corn poor. Stillwater dryland wheat adequate but low. Broadwater good showers. Lewis and Clark irrigated alfalfa strong. Cascade threshing active. Fergus seed wheat ample. Teton unchanged. Toole stock shipped. Valley harvest advancing. Rye and wheat mixed. Sanders grain improving.
Lieut. Loche M. Maurer, recently back from nearly two years with the A E F in France, stopped in Dillon this week to visit relatives. He is discharged from service on Sept. 2 and will return to his former home at One boa. En route he will visit an uncle in Idaho.
Montana officials agree to replace the Glendale bridge spanning the Big Hole river near Melrose with a modern two span steel structure. Construction of piers and abuttments will begin in low water window, with demolition of the old wooden bridge planned early next year. Bids will cover plank and cement roadways with plans from the State Highway Commission.
Beaverhead High School announces a new vocational program open to students age fourteen and older without requiring an eighth grade diploma. The year starts September 8 with 8:45 am classes and includes piano lessons for junior girls in 1919 20 and broader access in 1920 21. Miss Wharton will lead the music work, credits count toward graduation, and the school seeks local work placements to support students.
The old band stand at Montana Street near Bannack Street has been torn down after 25 years. Citizens welcomed its demolition amid memories of hobos and pests once housed there. In earlier years it hosted band concerts and two speeches by William Jennings Bryan to Dillon residents.
A district court case against Albert Davis for forgery awaits trial after he cleared a bad $75 check at Red Star garage Dillon. Sidney Miller and Geo Hopkins oversaw a county land sale at the courthouse with prices from ten dollars per acre. Elizabeth Sutherland conducted eighth grade exams at the courthouse as part of fall high school admissions. A new concrete coal bin is being built north of the courthouse. Humane officer P J Gilligan investigated local cases, and John Ninth, after a Saturday assault case, received a floater from Judge Nelson.
Joseph Jones visits his wife and friends then returns to Washington with Clyde for school. Arthur Rice returns from France to Apex to visit family. Other residents travel between Apex Dillon and Sandpoint while reports mention heat smoke and local gatherings including a September 10 Ladies' Community club event.
Emil Conger driver for the Dillon Steam Laundry suffered a badly hurt left leg when an automobile struck the wagon he drove last Saturday. The collision also wrecked the wagon.
