Seminoles Driven From Everglades By Florida Drainage Boom

In Okeechobee Florida Seminole Indians once ruled vast Everglades and now number about 700 as they face drift from ancestral lands due to drainage and development. Huge canals from Lake Okeechobee to the Atlantic are opening up 4 000 000 acres to farming while the Florida East Coast Railway expands beyond Okeechobee to move bumper harvests. The Seminoles, remaining free roving, are adapting by teaching newcomers and living in dugout canoes as they cling to a tribal code amid rapid change.
