Montana Seed Testing Lab Highlights Purity and Germination Methods
The Montana Grain Inspection Laboratory outlines free seed purity and germination tests for state residents. It explains sampling rules, representative lots, and the roles of the Association of Official Seed Analysts in standardizing methods, plus details on purity test steps, noxious weed seeds, and five key weed species.

Laboratory Tests Predict Field Germination Rates
Two years of results compare lab germination tests with field germination counts at Pazeman. Lab results closely indicate the percentage of seeds that will produce healthy plants under normal field conditions. Preliminary findings suggest 14 field seeds yield 7.5 to 8.5 percent of the planting value, a product of purity and germination. The lab field relation holds more for cereals and large seeds than for flax, alfalfa, or small seeds.
