Doings of the Week from Beaverhead and Madison Counties

Cattle transfers and local notices from Laxeview April report

C. M. Grimes bought Massingill Bros. beef steers and other cattle from Hollinsworth and Haydens for Monida delivery. Prices ranged 45 for steers and 35 for cows. Freeman Marble sold cows with calves for 40 per head. Local residents report visitors and family movements among Fitch Nye Kent Missen families and others in the Mayo Valley area.

Mathew Johnson of Medicine Lodge made a business trip to the county seat. The Sullivan mining party passed through the canyon en route to Bloody Dick country. Wm. Blair of Horse Prairie was in Dillon last week. Stockmen from Big Hole sought cows and calves locally. D. Mooney of Grasshopper was in Dillon on the 20th. Mr. Craver, Dillon, returned from the southern part of the county Monday. Hon. D. E. Metlen visited his ranch on Horse Prairie this week.

Old Pioneer Nathaniel Axe Dies After Brief Illness in Dillon

Nathaniel Axe, a long time Dillon resident and pioneer born in Wayne County Ohio on November 7 1830 died Tuesday morning after a brief illness paralysis from a brain clot. Funeral services were held at the family home with many in attendance. He came west with miners and guides later helping build Dillon locating here in 1866. Survived by his wife and three of five children, he was known for cheerfulness and mercy to the needy and his abstinence from liquor and tobacco despite a hard frontier life. He made friends with Kit Carson and aided U S forces at Salt Lake City. He was a devout Methodist who loved sermons and kept a strong memory for texts and thoughts even without professing religion. May he rest with God.
