Sheriff Gist Targeted by Tribune Attack Over Jail Escape
The Examiner responds to the Tribune's charges about the Sept. 4 jail escape by Clifford noting the absence of Sheriff Gist and blaming the paper’s distortions. It details that Acting Under Sheriff Ike Edinger was away, the escape occurred during the funeral, and states the prisoner was later recaptured. It criticizes the Tribune’s claims about the new jail’s safety and describes concrete flaws, while defending Gist and predicting strong electoral support.
