Beaverhead County Road Talks Open and Bridge Plans

Montana's G. O. P. Leader Carter Dies in Washington

Former U S senator Thomas Henry Carter of Montana died in Washington D C from infarction of the lungs after months of illness. He had a long career in Montana politics and national service including terms as U S senator and chairman of irrigation and reclamation and the postal savings bank bill advocate. Burial plans include Helena interment after services in Washington.

Noted desperado captured in Dillon

A noted desperado, Mike Donnelly alias Charles Robison, 29, a Washington penitentary escapee, was captured in Dillon after a dust storm aided escape. He led authorities across states, once arrested in Idaho Falls for safe blowing, and was recaptured by Deputy Sheriff Dec Erwin. Another Kansas prison fugitive, Lewis Meyers alias William Hess, was handed to authorities after fleeing in 1905.

Reverend Brown to Lecture on Ibsen at Guild Hall

Portland preacher Rev. William Thurston Brown will lecture Friday evening at the Guild Hall on Ibsen the Prophet of Individualism. He is a powerful speaker expected to draw a large audience and the admission price is 25 cents.

State fair boost drives Beaverhead County turnout

More than 90 have signed for the Beaverhead county special train to Helena with expectations of doubling attendance. The plan offers Pullman cars and no transfers with cheaper, more convenient accommodations near the fair grounds. Reservations are urged through Mr. Hazelbaker or the depot, the courtroom, or his office. Meanwhile a jury panel is selected as the court proceeds with a criminal case after defense objection.

Nelton On Trial for Killing Charley Streb in Melrose

J A Nelton faces a murder trial before Judge Donlan in Butte for the July 28 Melrose shooting of Charley B Streb. A 12-member jury was seated after voir dire, with Maloney and Walker leading the prosecution. Nelton, guarded by deputies, studies jurors with attorney Denny, while Sullivan’s partner faces a separate trial.

Dillon Cubs Lose Three-Game Set at Twin Bridges

Dillon baseball team returns from Twin Bridges after three games. Friday’s ten inning affair favored Twin Bridges on a passed ball. Saturday’s 20 to 6 Madison County win contrasted with Sundays 7 to 1 loss. About 800 fans traveled by auto and nearly $5,000 changed hands. A challenge for a return match at Twin Bridges for a $500 purse and $1,000 side bet was refused by Twin Bridges.

Monster Cauliflower Grown at Lima

A giant seven and a half pound cauliflower grown by W H Boule, a Lima pioneer veteran, at an elevation of 6265 feet impresses locals. The healthy plant showcases Boule’s vegetables, and there is hope for a State Fair exhibit to win blue ribbons for Beaverhead.

Oregon Short Line to Stop at Willis Daily

The state railroad commission orders the Oregon Short Line to stop one train in each direction daily at Willis after October 1. Trains had been diverted to Glen since April due to the steep grade, inconveniencing passengers and ranchers who must travel farther. The commission notes that while frequent stops across many miles are impractical, Willis deserves a station for better service.
