Sargent Named Railroad Agent in Dillon for Oregon Short Line

A. D. Sargent, longtime local agent for Union Pacific, is appointed agent for the Oregon Short Line in Dillon to succeed H. B. Baumberger. He previously served Armstead in 1932 and is well known in Beaverhead county for his familiarity with shipping needs. The report notes his industry ties and extensive community support.

Trained Dogs Put On Show At Rotary Meet

Two Russian shepherds Rinlo and Junior entertained the Dil lon Rotary club during a Monday night dinner under owner W C Browning of Hollywood who is visiting Dillon. Rinlo impressed with voice bowing and church prayers while Junior performed leaps and a pretend death. Browning offered tips on dog care and training. Chester Hale chaired the meeting with guests Dougan Luebben and Don Wheat, high school students.

Plans for a Sunday picnic at the Big Hole battleground are complete. L. V. McWheterter and two Nez Perce Indian braves from 1877 will attend to meet attendees and locate battlefield landmarks. coffee will be served free on the grounds.

A. R. Regent Visits Dillon for DAR Events

Mrs. A. J. Rahn state regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution visited Dillon this week. She spoke at the dedication of Fortunate camp and attended a dinner hosted by Mrs. Frank A. Hazle baker. A luncheon by Miss Jean Bishop and Mrs. Mildred Thompson followed with Beaverhead chapter members present. Rahn also conducted a business meeting and spoke at the Sunday picnic on the significance of marking historical sites.

Committee Selects Three Artists for mural in Dillon post office

A Dillon committee of the public building branch of the U S treasury reviewed 15 artists who submitted 23 pictures for a mural to be placed in the Dillon post office lobby. They narrowed to three for Washington submission for final selection by the painting and sculpture section. Open Season Fails to Trim Beaverhead Bird Population

Beavershead sportsmen and visitors from Butte Anaconda and elsewhere hunted upland birds in a one day open season. Though some bagged three birds, many others did not see any game. Hunters stash shotguns until ducks open October 9.

Beaverhead unit of the American Legion auxiliary held its first meeting of the new term Monday night at the city hall. Mrs. C. M. Casterline announced standing committees for the year. A social session followed at Mrs. E. L. Fairbanks home with the radio and music committee in charge.

Dillon Gun Club Schedules Sunday Hunts for Duck Season Start

The Dillon Gun Club will hold shoots on Sunday mornings instead of twilight events. Twilight shoots are canceled for the season due to darkness, with weekly Sunday sessions continuing until the duck season opens on October 9. Leslie Smith shot 48 of 50 in the last Thursday event, followed by J. Lynch 47, P. Schwab 47, and others.

4000 Head Beaverhead Cattle Sold

Poindexter and Orr Livestock of Beaverhead County sold about 4000 head of beef cattle for over 250000 dollars. Art Watson of Wolf Langman Livestock Commission announced the sale, which went to be shipped immediately to eastern markets. It marks the second large Montana cattle sale this season and follows an August sale of 2100 head for 157511 dollars to stock E L Dana at Hound Creek ranch.

Forty Beaverhead county high school athletes trial for berths under Coach D L Johnson. The early season workout yields promising material as veterans from the 1936 Class B champions compete with new players. The Beavers open with Butte high B at Butte next Saturday as a curtain raiser to the Butte Billings clash.

Grade School Begins Term Last Monday

Dillon public schools opened the regular term Monday morning with 439 enrollments announced by Charles Henry. Enrollment in opening grades was down while upper grades ran near average. Most of last year’s staff returns. no primary replacement yet for Mrs. Alice Olmsted, with Mrs. Alvin M. Jones acting as kindergarten instructor. The schools start full operation after Normal college opens September 27.
