Elkhorn Burn Condemns Blowdown Debris North Of Elkhorn

The Elkhorn burn finished successfully last Friday, removing about 175 acres of inflammable debris from the blowdown area north of Elkhorn Hot Springs in the Beaverhead National Forest. A 100 mph windstorm in 1948 swept the area, leaving tangled timber worth millions of board feet. The forest service planned a controlled burn to reduce fire hazard and explored pulpwood use, but high freight costs and inaccessibility prevented mills from buying. Twenty five fire crews, a Caterpillar bulldozer, wetting equipment, radios, and hard hats aided the operation.
