DILLON Montana Beaverhead County high school selects D L Johnson as principal at a trustees meeting on Saturday night. Johnson, a six year faculty member born in Helena, Montana, holds a B S in agricultural education from Montana State College and has 15 years of educational experience prior to Dillon. He succeeds Conrad Q Orr who resigned recently. Earlier reports note John Jackson’s win in a Jackson Sunday shotgun event with top scores in singles handicap and doubles amid cold windy weather.
Diana Rebekah lodge members meet to plan the 90th anniversary event for Rebekah Odd Fellowship on Sept 18 with committees for banquet entertainment and secret work. Fannie Adams will visit Sept 25. charter draped in memory of past president Ethel Hirsch.
Beaverhead post of the American Legion will resume meetings after a two month recess. The group will install Commander-elect Luther S. Smith at 8 o clock at the Metlen hotel, with installation by Mining District Commander C A Bechler. New officers include Jay V. McCarthy, George M. Melton, E W Bond, Dr F M Poindexter, Ray P. Jones, H L Hutton, and Parke T. Scott.
George M. Melton was elected justice of the peace by Beaverhead county commissioners filling the vacancy from George Opp’s death. Melton, a former Montana Bar member and Beaverhead state senator, succeeds in the county post. The court will repair the courthouse boiler instead of a new install. bids unopened, T. K. Luebben of Dillon hired to repair the current boiler. Albert S. Baker instructed to take tax deeds on all eligible properties.
James W. Uncles of Butte, former district lieutenant commander, spoke on Kiwanis purposes and structure at the local Kiwanis meeting. He was introduced by program chairman Jack Barrett. Seven Sheridan residents attended as seekers of a Madison county club, including Dallas Terry and others, with group singing led by Kenneth Wheat.
A clerk of court records study shows seventeen couples tied the knot list for August. Five Dillon couples top the count, with four from Idaho and two from Jena. South Dakota and Seattle pairs also joined, amid names Reichle, Grant, Wisdom, and Deer Lodge noted in the tally.
The American Legion Auxiliary held its season’s first meeting Monday night at 8 at the city hall. President-elect Mrs. Ben H. Davis led business sessions with reports from delegates to the Deer Lodge district convention. New officers led the program, and Mrs. S. P. Meade spoke on Red Cross garments.
Miss Gladys Forester grade school teacher was injured in a Labor Day accident near Stayton Oregon. She suffered bruises and cuts while traveling with relatives who were more seriously hurt. Mrs A F Waldorf substitutes for her and Miss Forester is convalescing with relatives in Bend Oregon.
Ed Heikkila was elected president of the Bond local Farmers Union at a meeting last Wednesday night at Nelson school. H. M. Miller was named vice president and Holgar Carl son secretary. Naomi McCleery of Glasgow reported on the National Junior camp held in the Black Hills region of South Dakota.
Beaverhead county farmers in the 1941 AAA conservation program must complete soil-building practices before September 30 to earn payment this year. The 1941 program ends this month and unfinished work will be paid under the 1942 program.
Miss Eleanor V. Nelson will succeed Mrs Scholtes as Beaverhead county home demonstration agent. She starts Sept 8 and will serve the area half time with the remainder as assistant home demonstration agent. Nelson taught home economics at Libby high school and studied at St Olaf College and Iowa State College. She is a Montana native.
E M Birely states registrants in selective service should consult local boards to gauge how soon they may be called for training. Deferments exist only for specific skilled shortages and are decided case by case. no blanket delays. If orders are not imminent, students may begin or continue study while awaiting their induction.
Forest G. Bayerd, city water commissioner, tendered his resignation to Mayor Bert Megquier on Friday September 5. Ill health prompted the move. Elza Patrick, chief of police, will take over the duties. Bayerd was appointed after Holtz’s death May 17, 1931, taking office the following June.
Postmaster Harry Andrus received word that the morning southbound and evening northbound trains will be discontinued effective Saturday September 13. Verification from Omaha is awaited. if confirmed trains 30 and 31 may also be dropped, according to UP official B L Chism.
County commissioners receive a Dillon Kiwanis schedule for lighting the county fairgrounds field. Lighting installed last year to support softball. Field not open to any organization. Local groups charged 12.50 per night. out of town or commercial groups 25 per night. Charges may change with breakage.
The Dillon city council met in its monthly session at the city hall with Mayor Bert Megquier presiding. Tony Kruletz asked to purchase 80 acres of land formerly bought for an airport. the tract was approved for sale at $200 total or $2.50 per acre. Discussion covered the sharp curve near the Montana State Normal College campus and a possible light or reflector sign. The board also extended water mains.
Harry E. Andrus of Dillon, prominent hotel operator and civic booster, died at 7:45 this morning after months of illness. Born August 30, 1862 in Lafayette Indiana, he moved to Colorado as a youth, later settled in Dillon in 1897, built the Andrus hotel in 1917, and served on the Beaverhead county fair board along with the Dillon Elks and Rotary. His passing marks the loss of a long-time community leader as minutes ago his family remained at his bedside.
James H Bray 74 died Friday afternoon from a heart attack while driving to a Baptist parsonage with neighbor John Stephenson. A Kentucky native, he settled in Montana in 1904 and Beaverhead county since 1914. Survived by wife and daughter Julia Kannegaard. Funeral Monday at Brundage funeral home.
Over 30 boys joined Head Coach D. L. Johnson for practice as the team readies for the season opener against the Butte Reds in Butte this Saturday. Only five lettermen return, with Mizell Holden Ray Conger Dale Willey Jack Rogan and Monty Kamps the remaining veterans. Ten regulars left last year including the entire line and three backs. More than a dozen players have shown potential, including Jim Barrett Rodney Sinclair and Norman Grant as backfield prospects.
Word has it that Mrs Arnold W Nelson wife of Pastor Nelson of Houston Minnesota and formerly pastor of the First Lutheran church in Dillon died Aug 29 at a hospital in Minot North Dakota The Nelson family left Dillon in September 1938 to permit Pastor Nelson to take up duties in Minnesota They were vacationing in North Dakota at the time of her death It is believed she died of a heart ailment.
The Elks lodge No 1554 met in their hall last night with reports from Homer Faust on the national convention and Harold Murray on the state convention.
