Montana counties reduce bonded debt halving overall burden

Helena reports Frank H. Johnson says 56 Montana counties ended last fiscal year with bonded indebtedness of 11 818 793 down from 27 913 336 eleven years earlier. Counties cut debt to under 50 000 in several cases and save substantial yearly interest for old age and poor funds.

County High School Term Opens After Vacation

Beaverhead county high school began its regular term with enrollment near 250 on opening day. Principal Orr noted about 60 newcomers. 15 minute registration periods aided students in acquainting with assignments. Five new faculty members joined and the training school and Montana State Normal college schedules were announced for September.

Union party tickets struck down in Montana convention fallout

Helena September 8 presidential electors for the Union party in the Montana general election were rejected by Secretary of State Sam Mitchell. The party had named a full slate composed of former Democratic ticket candidates, violating state law prohibiting cross ticket candidacy. Mitchell noted the executive committee may replace nominees by October 3.

Wrecks Flood Local Roads With Fatality and Injuries

Local roads saw multiple vehicle wrecks over recent days. The only reported death was near Wisdom Sun when a truck driven by Wilhelm overturned about six miles north of Melrose injuring Stevenson severely, while a car driven by Rudolph Polish lost control near Dillon, causing a trailer to detach and scatter furniture along the highway.

Demonstration Clubs Present Fashion Show in Beaverhead

Members of Beaverhead county home demonstration clubs host an Achievement day at the training school with a style revue featuring dresses made by members. Judges Miss Vera Melvyn and Mrs. Henry Deutsch, piano by Miss Billie Baxter, and Miss Nell McKnight as accompanist. Armstead 4-H will perform a tap dance while Josephine Pollock lectures on Textiles Old and New. Mountain View 4-H Club from Dell offers entertainment.

Beaverhead Voters Need Register by Friday Sept 18

Beaverhead voters not on the electors list must register by Friday September 18. Clerk Albert S. Baker reported 189 new names added since the July primary, bringing the count to 3978, 157 short of the 1934 general election total.

Republican meeting slated for September 26 in Dillon

Beaverhead Republican officials announce a public Dillon meeting Saturday night September 26 under state central committee auspices. A State Chairman letter says a Republican National Committee representative and two state candidates will speak after a 6:30 dinner at the Andrus hotel with a business session. Senior organizers include Dora Smith, Bertha Chairman, and Sam Ditty.

Three Held On Hold-Up Charge Near Dillon

Archie Hull, a Poindexter & Orr ranch hand, was robbed at gunpoint of 37.50 by three men around 11:30 Saturday night near the Metlen hotel. Sheriff James A. McCollum said the trio was arrested Sunday in Lima and two admitted involvement, naming W Backer, Albert Totter, and B F Towne as suspects.

Frank A. Hazelbaker was named permanent chairman of the state Republican platform convention in Billings last Friday. He pledged to end state government extravagance and waste, eliminate general property taxes for state purposes, and pursue a broad program of tax reduction.

Butte Woman Dies After Wisdom Car Wreck

Mrs. Stella Emerson 43 of Butte died in the Wisdom Montana area after a car crash Sunday. Roy Priest said he tried to pass another vehicle near Ralston and Wisdom, his car overturned, Emerson suffered a head wound and leg laceration, treated at the scene and at St. James hospital in Butte. Dr. Gilbert J. Thomas aided at the scene and en route.

Thief Takes Deputy's Saddle After Overnight Theft

A saddle thief triggered a statewide hunt after taking Deputy James Burt of Lima’s saddle from a barn overnight. Burt alerted Sheriff James A McCollum yesterday morning, expressing anger over the loss and requesting prompt recovery.

Electrical Storm Smashes Through Dillon Friday

A severe Friday morning electrical storm struck Dillon with continuous thunder and lightning for about 30 minutes. Lightning hit at least four city locations including near the Texaco station at Glenclaffe and Washington, and at Atlantic and Morse streets. A transformer failed on the West side and a heavy downpour followed. Deputy Sheriff Pat Flynn felt the concussion while driving past.

Funeral of WT Stultz Held in Dillon

Funeral services for Wilbur T. Stultz former Beaverhead County High School athlete who was killed in a California auto crash were held at Brundage chapel with Rev. W. J. Loar officiating. Interment followed at Mountain View cemetery as investigators review details of the deer hunting trip mishap.

Beaverhead Post to Install New Commander Tomorrow

Beaverhead Post No. 20 American Legion will install 7T. Lee McCracken as commander at the Andrus hotel after a dinner tomorrow night. He succeeds Guy D. Combes, with A. M. Jones vice commander E W. New Pipe Line Trench at Ermont Completed

Completion of a trench for a water line from Rattlesnake creek to the Ermont mine 16 miles west of Dillon was announced by Carl Mast. The two and a quarter mile trench was finished in under 30 days and will supply water via a four inch pipe with an electrical pump to the mine. About 70 men across two shifts are employed while a mill is under construction.

Argenta Goldfields mine opens as district boom grows

The Argenta district reports its biggest boom since its early days as the Argenta Goldfields Consolidated mine near Argenta begins ore crushing last week. Milling operations to increase rapidly, crews up on several district properties, and a claim of ore assaying 10 ounces to the ton surfaced this week.
