Montana State Normal College employees donate in relief drive

All staff at Dillon’s Montana State Normal College pledged one day’s pay totaling $1600 for six months to aid Red Cross drought relief in the state and western Dakota. The combined state payroll contribution reached $2000 with $400 from other county residents on the state payroll.

Slot Machine Raid Targets Five Soft Drink Establishments

County and city officers seized 14 slot machines from five soft drink venues last Friday afternoon and arrested owner Tom Barnett on possession charges. Barnett posted bond at $2,000 after an overnight arraignment. Sheriff W C Orr Undersheriff Carl Hartwig and Deputies W E Barry along with City Officers Warren Sutherland and Bob Gordon conducted the raid.

Education group picks leaders at district convention

Elizabeth Shotwell of the Normal College Training School was elected second vice president of the Montana Education Association Western District at the Helena convention. J G Ragsdale of Butte was chosen district president, succeeding W W Wahl of Beaverhead County High School. Over 40 Dillon instructors attended, with participation by Mary L Innes Esther Snodgrass Professor Rush Jordan Supt Charles Henry Lucy H Carson and Eldora Ragon. Jessie L Duboc joined the Miles City program. Shotwell spoke at Lewistown and alumni also contributed across the three gatherings.

Beaverhead Post Plans Armistice Celebration

Beaverhead post of the American Legion completed tentative Armistice Day plans and will finalize arrangements at the regular meeting in the city hall council rooms. An all day program starts at 7 am with a reveille salute, a parade at 10, then a public program of patriotic songs and addresses. A football game at the athletic field is mentioned.

Old-Time Dillon Resident Gertrude Heggerty Dies

Dillon resident Mrs. Gertrude Heggerty died Sunday morning at her North Idaho street home after a long illness. Funeral services were held at St. Rose Catholic Church with Rev. Father F. X. Lechner presiding. Interment followed at Mountain View cemetery. Born in Ireland on February 2, 1868, she had lived in Dillon for many years and is survived by daughter Mrs. Della Murff of Salt Lake City.

Fine new building at Beaverhead County farm

The Beaverhead County poor farm moved 21 inmates into a new sanitary ward in a building formerly used as a pest house. The mansion was rejoined to the main building and will hold 25 single cots. The Thompson estate is valued at 279354.82 with real estate 81140 and personal property 198214.82.

Nine Carloads of Seed Peas Shipped by Beaverhead Ranchers

Beaverhead valley ranchers completed the shipment of nine carloads of seed peas last week under Roy Ferguson of Rodgers Brothers Seed Co. The crop yielded well with good quality and satisfactory prices. Dillon Associated Charities opened relief headquarters on Center street to collect vegetables, canned goods, clothing, and meats. donations can be dropped at the city police headquarters or arranged for pickup via Rev. R. Q. Shannon.

Beaverhead county shows 41 individuals and companies paying over 1 000 in taxes while 51 pay between 500 and 1 000. Oregon Short Line Railroad remains the top taxpayer with 87 997 14, First National Bank of Dillon 8 845 90, John Peterson is top individual with 6 642 34. Eight public utility firms exceed 100 in assessed taxes.

Mining Men Survey Frying Pan Basin West of Dillon

Professors A. V. Corry and Paul A. Schafer of the Montana School of Mines in Butte conducted a weekend survey of the Frying Pan basin west of Dillon where gold was recently found on the Warren Sutherland ranch. They plan further visits at the Beaverhead Mining association’s request to assess placer development. The initial trip showed the gold area lies in a former lake bed, supporting a lake theory about the district. Amateur prospectors have since washed out colors from district gravel.

Beavers Break Into Win Column With 6-0 Victory

Beaverhead county high school Beavers end their skid with a 6-0 win over Powell county high of Deer Lodge. The game was played in Deer Lodge with Beavers dominating most of the action and the Powell defense unable to cross Beaver territory. Normal Musicians Entertain Dillon Rotarians Monday

Music instructors and students of the Montana State Normal College entertained the Dillon Rotary club with an excellent program at its weekly dinner at the Hanson cafe Monday night. Ralph McFadden, instructor of piano at the college, was chairman of the meeting. The enjoyable musical program opened with two violin duets.
