Fattening Calves Into Baby Beef Specialist's Job

Livestock specialist R B Millin explains that baby beef comes from calves 14 to 18 months heavily fed after weaning. Start grain before weaning, then gradual grain increases. Proper timing, castration, dehorning, and vaccination minimize milk fat loss, with profits driven by the 120 to 200 day finish gap and feed mix choices such as alfalfa and corn.

Montana Experiment Station Reports Baby Beef Feed Trials

Eight steer calves gained 7.96 pounds daily for 136 days on a ground oats and hulled barley ration, then not fat enough for baby beef. A second group gained 1.56 pounds daily on about four pounds of grain, also not fat enough to sell as killers or to gain on grass, disproving the idea that grass alone yields good baby beef after some grain feeding. The article notes rations for baby beef in Montana and the need for muscle and bone building feeds, with substitutions and grain alternatives.
