VA expands hospitals but cannot meet demand for veterans
The Veterans Administration reports growth from 97 hospitals with 82 000 beds in 1945 to 130 hospitals with 111 000 beds now yet still faces bed shortages. A priority system screens applicants with emergency needs first, then service connected illnesses, while non service connected cases wait for beds and prove they cannot pay.
