Olsen Rules Boost In Gas Tax Also Affects Diesel

Initiative No. 55 would lift the gasoline tax and applies to diesel fuels as well. Arnold H. Olsen opines the rule removes opposition from labor groups who backed the measure with over 20 000 signatures. Backers say the ruling clears the path to fund highway construction by matching federal aid. Farmers and unions have debated diesel tax parity and state law defines diesel as taxed to equal gasoline when used on highways. The measure aims to close a $4 393 549 fiscal gap to receive federal funds.
