The sixth annual Beaverhead county fair is canceled due to heavy weekend snow. Secretary T. J. Murray and fair directors thank exhibitors and promise efforts to reopen next fall. A race meeting may still occur Friday and Saturday if track conditions allow, with condolences expressed for a local death.
The funeral service for Mrs. A F Waldorf who died suddenly at Murray hospital Butte followed two weeks of illness. Rev A W Hamilton led the Methodist service with a choir and floral tributes as mourners from all sections paid last respects to a young, capable, devoted mother and cherished community member.
The Dillon public school opened for the fall session with about 400 pupils registered. Four rooms are in use at the Normal college and one at the library, plus four rooms in the old school hosting two sessions daily. A new teacher, Miss Rait of Cedar Rapids, joins 14 instructors. Two sessions run from 8:30 to 12:15 and 12:45 to 4:30 to accommodate all students. Construction on the new building progresses rapidly and promises to be a premier grade school facility in the state.
Big Hole News notes contractors finish a large concrete floor 44 by 70 feet for car housing with a repair pit and frost proof well. Floor holds 108 cubic yards of sand 170 sacks of cement and covers over 2900 square feet. Dr Bimrose plans soda water for Les Davis and guards. Doc moved wheat near Dillon selling grain to Strawbridge and Les with delivery to come.
Lindley Phillips enrolled Monday to take special work. The high school football team will play in Anaconda Saturday and return to Dillon the same day. The squad includes Baker Evans Badcon Paddock Wyatt Ball Mc Farlin Collins Murray Finch Gosman Chapman and Bird. Thanksgiving trip to Idaho Falls aims to avenge last year's defeat. A date with Philipsburg may be set, while the Bozeman game will likely be canceled.
Don Albee of Bowen attended the Welcome and Peckover sale at Anaconda last week and stopped off in Butte on his return home to visit his sister.
The University of Montana forms a Bureau of Public Information to answer any Montana citizen inquiry free of charge. Director Prof. Carl Holliday will oversee responses from university departments, aiming to bring knowledge to the people similar to Wisconsin and Vanderbilt programs.
Hughes and McCaleb relocate after delays due to late fixtures to the rebuilt White building in Dillon. The new store features antique oak woodwork heavy plate glass fixtures and mirror cases with a display room for toys and a rear area for paints oils and glass.
A church notice urges members to stop making excuses and attend services at First Presbyterian. It calls for Sunday morning worship at eleven and Sunday evening at seven twenty.
The district court will convene October 22 for numerous cases including The State of Montana versus Henry T Beghtel rape and others. Additional dockets list burglaries assaults and a crime against nature with dates through November 6. An unrelated agricultural report notes record yields on the Maddox ranch near Grass Range and a church service at First Presbyterian.
The Monmal staff lists Normal College students serving in various editorial and managerial roles. Names include Mrs Thomas as Assistant Social Editor, Evelyn Coughlin as Editor in Chief, Louise Hollister as Wit and Humor Editor, Catherine White as Assistant Wit and Humor Editor, Julia Burke as Training School Editor, Margaret Carroll as Alumni Editor, Bersie Smith as Business Manager, and several assistants across Dillon Butte Missoula Havre Anaconda Jackson and others.
Beaverhead county eyes wheat as a main industry with a new Dillon elevator and beach lands east of town. Norman Holden won first prize at a state fair for his Turkey red wheat, signaling high quality. With more acreage and seed selection, Fergus County yields suggest Beaverhead may match or exceed a sixty one bushels per acre average in coming years.
Last Saturday Prof. T. T. Job from Beaverhead high school led nearly thirty students in physiology and botany toward Argenta caves to advance natural science research. The group split into two rigs with one arriving by noon while the second rig was somehow lost en route but still collected specimens. Miss Nitzkowski, Domestic Science instructor, joined the expedition.
The winter entertainment series at the Normal college auditorium in Dillon opens October 18 with Alvah Green. Seven lyceum acts follow including The Commonwealth Quartet, Edmund Vance Cooke, The Konenoy Concert company, Dr. Thomas E. Green, The Floyds, Benjamin Chapin, and a four act Lincoln play. Season tickets $3.50 for seven evenings. single tickets $2. Tickets at KE Ray Mosher and E M Yeaman’s store.
Reports from the Union Stock Yards in Chicago show 72 989 horses employed there, just 278 fewer than a year ago. Boston houses 60 fewer than a decade ago, Minneapolis has 158 more, and St. Louis 780 more. Despite the decline of city driving horses, total draft horse use appears higher than ever, despite motor vehicles.
State Bank Examiner H S Magraw reports 294780 dollars changed hands at the state fair races with the 5 percent state take totaling 14789 dollars. Saturday saw the biggest wagering with 71000 dollars bet followed by Thursday 68780 and Friday 66955.
The Pastime theatre has enlarged its orchestra. Joe Medawnen, one of Butte’s cleverest trapdrummers, joins as a valuable addition and will debut Friday night providing effects for the pictures. Watch for Ivanhoe next Thursday October 16.
