Corner Stone Laid for Helena Cathedral in Montana
In Helena on October 5 a 4000 strong crowd witnessed the laying of the corner stone of the new St. Helena cathedral marking the sixty seventh anniversary of Montana’s first Catholic mission. The event drew messages from Pope Pius X, President Roosevelt, and Cardinal Falconio, with bishops and dignitaries from Portland, Great Falls, Baker City, Boise, and Butte in attendance. A parade of over 2000 moved through the mud to the cathedral site, where prayers and blessing rites closed the ceremonies. Bishop Carroll read the papal telegram and Roosevelt’s note sending greetings and congratulations. The pope’s message praised the project and extended cordial benedictions to clergy and people of the northwest.
