New proof of the feed value of Big Hole basin grasses is shown in an analysis by the Montana Agricultural College at Bozeman. Four samples from Frank A. Hazelbaker ranch near Wisdom indicate Big Hole hay contains greater food content than grasses from other sections of the state. Continued on page 8.
The Montana Tuberculosis Association launches its annual Christmas seal drive with Mrs. Frank C. McFadden in charge for Beaverhead county. The campaign plans to fund local welfare projects including tuberculin testing for Beaverhead schoolchildren. Harry J. Harkins, 47, a Butte salesman, died when his truck overturned near Monida two miles north of the town. Donald McNeill, his son in law, survived with minor bruises.
The first Boy Scout court of honor of the season took place Thursday afternoon in the high school gym with Chairman W. W. Wahl in charge. About 60 people attended as Eagle Scout Fielding Graves led the pledge and oath and a song, while O. B. Hoovers of Butte observed. Troops performed stunts illustrating Scouting
The fall term district court trial of the state versus E. V. Burgin ended with a jury verdict of not guilty after about an hour of deliberation. Burgin was accused of sending a patent medicine package with a libelous wrapper message to a neighbor in Centennial valley. Local witnesses from Centennial valley attended the city session.
Montana's sheep industry this year created 20,000,000 in new wealth and the investment of the 4,147 sheepmen in Montana is placed at 108,600,000 according to Secretary Mur ray EB Stebbing of the Montana Woolgrowers association. The Montana sheepmen spent 6,640,000 for labor, 2,000,000 for groceries, 1,400,000 for grazing leases and 1,600,000 for taxes, he states. The 51,321,000 sheep in the United States produced this year.
Governor Frank H. Cooney joined the president in proclaiming Thanksgiving Day for Thursday November 30. The proclamation notes progress against want unemployment and the campaign to restore happiness, and speaks of national stress and resilience through government effort and public perseverance.
Dillon Elks will hold their annual memorial services Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the training school auditorium. The public is invited to attend. An impressive program has been arranged with an orchestra ensemble including L. A. Gregory violin director Harold Wheat flute Tom Luebben Jr clarinet Edythe Kenison cornet and Paul.
The Dillon volunteer fire department hosts its annual Thanksgiving ball at the city hall auditorium tomorrow night. Baxter Tonrey Orchestra provides music, with three door prizes and a chance to win an electric refrigerator for New Year’s.
Local Red Cross relief headquarters on Montana Street distributed salt pork today to families from federal food stocks. The Dillon association notes many listed titles from the National Congress of Parents and Teachers are in the public library, including The Bent Twig and The Golden Age.
The Gargoyles dramatics club at Montana State Normal College staged its annual comedy night in the college auditorium Friday. Three one act plays were presented to a pleased audience. The Little Symphony orchestra, directed by Miss Fran, accompanied the performance.
Beaverhead valley ranch laborer Joe Moore underwent amputation of his right foot at Barrett hospital after a shotgun discharge while duck hunting on the Staudenmeyer ranch north of Dillon. He crawled for help and was found by Lindley Phillips and his son while they were canoeing on the river, then rushed to Dillon for treatment.
Training school pupils present the last of three performances of Gifts of Autumn in the school auditorium tonight.
Beaverhead Red Cross roll call ends tomorrow per Chairman J. C. Faller. Dillon’s quota nearly matches last year while other towns report late. Many residents still unreached by canvassers urged to leave membership fees with T. B. Luebben.
The Dillon Lyric Quartet will take part in the annual praise service of the Eilen May guild at the Presbyterian church on Sunday evening December 3 at 7 30. The program includes hymn sung by the congregation Open Our Eyes and MacFarlane.
Dillon Elks lodge staged a Friday evening bridge tournament at St. Rose hall with about fifty players. Farnum Schuyler and H. M. Brundage led the East West and North South divisions respectively, each half awarding a turkey prize. Winners qualify for state and national awards as Elks lodges nationwide back the event.
Beaverhead county officials announce 72 civil works jobs allotted by the state committee as the senate ends its first extraordinary session day with routine business and a governor’s message. Senator George M. Merton of Beaverhead proposes a tavern system replacing beer and liquor acts as a compromise between saloon and state stores.
County Nurse Luella Stickney reports an elderly couple living on a beach ranch east of Dillon with no transport or contact to the outside world. They face a dangerous winter unless a horse can be secured to reach their nearest neighbor seven miles away for supplies and help. The man is in poor health and relies on county relief, with no means to move provisions or seek aid. An old team could restore mobility and safety, according to Stickney.
Guy B. Cantrell aged 31 a Lima resident died in a Butte hospital Friday morning after weeks of illness. Born July 13 1902 in Pickens District of Columbia he moved to Beaverhead County eight years ago and worked at the Gleed ranch near Lima. He had many friends in the southern county and Dijon who mourn his loss.
The Dillon Rotary club hosted a wives night at the Metlen hotel with about 60 attendees. W. W. Wahl chaired the event and four new members Dr Eugene G Free Anson Baxter Clyde Aiken and John W Walters were welcomed. The Dillon Lyric quartet comprising Mrs. W G Gilbert Mrs J C Jeppson H D Jewett and Dr W H Stephan performed.
Wisdom November 28 Special. Wisdom Woman's club sponsored the Calico Carnival Saturday night to raise funds for a Wisdom school library and a Big Hole adult library. The event drew strong public support with doors opening around 3 p.m. and bustling candy, apron, pie and coffee booths.
The Canyon Resort in Beaverhead county hosts a Thanksgiving Eve supper dance tonight drawing large crowds from Armstead Dell Lima and nearby Dillon amid anticipation of a bustling evening. Smiths orchestra will play for dancing and the famed midnight supper will be served.
