Social Security Outlays in Butte Area Forecast Over 300000
Patrick J. Shafer of the Butte Social Security Board reports Old-Age and Survivors Insurance payments in the six- county Butte area may exceed 300000 dollars in 1944. Silver Bow leads in beneficiaries and monthly payments with 704 recipients. In 1944, 151 lump sums totaled about 34000 dollars. Nationwide women and children account for 60 percent of claims and more than half of monthly benefits. The war affects staffing and filing patterns as many workers serve, and many claims are tied to military deaths. Shafer credits employers, newspapers, funeral homes, and officials for support to the program.
