Bannack Life and Law in Montana’s Early Years
In autumn 1862 Bannack drew fast diggers to Grasshopper Creek near the town. By January 1868 population reached 600 with notorious figures among its rough residents. The first Montana legislature met at Bannack in 1864 enacting Idaho laws as Montana’s framework, amid a mix of pioneers and desperadoes in a new frontier.
