Henry Edgar Dies at 84 A Montana Prospector
Henry F. Edgar 84 a Montana prospector who panned the first Alder Gulch gold that led to Virginia City and a $150 million era died at his Olive farm near Plains after a long life of mining and surveying. He was known as The Grand Old Man of Montana and supported children at Elk’s Christmas trees. Born in Scotland in 1826, he helped survey the US-Canada boundary, fought near Oregon in 1857, joined Fairweather’s party in 1863, and helped locate Alder Gulch. His funeral was held at Plains with burial beside his wife.
