Native Montana Horse Claim Stirs Paleontology Debate

Bearcreek physician Dr. J C F Siegfriedt announces fossil teeth from the Eagle coal mine as proof that the horse originated in North America. He says the six inch to foot high ancestor fed on palms and magnolia blossoms and preceded both cowboys and Indians by 30 to 40 million years. If accepted this upends paleogeography and challenges European-origin theory of horse evolution.

Fossil Clues Upend Horse Origin Theories in Fort Union Layer

Paleontologists report molars of an early horse found in the Fort Union layer suggesting North American origin for the ancient animal. Dr Siegfriedt contends that a Paleohippus lived near Bearcreek in a tropical swamp before glaciers drove its descendants south, giving rise to Eohippus and later Arabian horses via Europe. New fossils at Eagle coal mine attract scientists and may redefine horse migration history.
