Research Shows Large Fish Losses in Irrigation Ditches

Montana researchers led by William D Clothier report 1951 losses of 2 835 legal game fish weighing 1 186 pounds in a 20 mile West Gallatin River section. The study, aided by Montana Fish and Game and Montana State College, used weirs and electric shockers to measure fish moves and deaths. Clothier estimates annual losses of 13 400 fish or 3 600 pounds across the West Gallatin drainage, prompting new screening devices and management measures to protect Montana game fish.
