Ghost Town Carroll Shaped by Diamond R Transport Giants
Long ago Carroll on the Missouri river was built in 1874 by Matt Carroll E G Maclay and Colonel Charles Broadwater as a rival freight hub to Fort Benton for the Diamond R Transportation company. The town faded by the late 1870s as rails and safer routes emerged and its founders moved on.

Diamond R freight line drives Montana mining era growth
John J. Roe and Captain Nick Wall built the Diamond R brand a dominant Montana venture moving goods from Fort Benton to camps and posts across Montana and to Canada. Carroll Broadwater and Maclay ran mule and ox trains supplying government troops in the Sioux campaigns, including Gibbon’s command, with Carroll on the Baker and Sit ting Bull encounters. The enterprise formed a large, profitable middle 1870s industry shaping commerce and military logistics in the region.
