Cattle Industry Faces Proposed Processing Tax

From Washington comes word that a five member cattlemen committee under the Agricultural Adjustment Administration is preparing a plan offering benefits to producers and taxes to consumers. Most cattlemen oppose a national beef adjustment program and especially a processing tax, though the packer may bear the tax in practice by deducting it from prices paid to producers. The complex cattle market, with multiple ownership changes before final sale to the packer, complicates who ultimately bears the tax.
