Charles H. Phillips, manager of Dillon Implement Company, dies yesterday. He had led Dillon business operations and was a well known local figure. The passing marks the end of a long career in the community.
Charles H. Phillips 85 prominent Dillon businessman died suddenly at home after a period of ill health. Born March 28 1850 in Elizabeth Illinois he spent childhood in Warren Illinois. His body will be sent to Warren for interment. (Continued on page 6)
Mr and Mrs Herman Peterson return home after attending trap shoot meets across eastern and southern states. Mr Peterson set several fine records at these leading meets and were joined by Miss Alice Peterson from Denver who has been attending college there.
Norma Paddock of Wise River led the county eighth graders with an average 94.5 as 12 pupils passed and received diplomas. Other top scorers include Lois Dickson Millpoint 89.3 Esther Carlson Dewey 87.5 Jack Hirschy Jackson 86 and Lester Dise Gibbons 84.6. Eleven seventh graders succeeded in hygiene and geography with Lilah Forsythe Doyle 93.75 and David Fairbank Doyle 90.75 among the top.
Beaverhead post of the American Legion plans a large Fourth of July event to be held locally with wide attendance from Beaverhead and Madison counties. A highly anticipated registered trapshoot is set for the morning, with Dillon Gun Club officers forecasting broad regional participation. The Silver Bow post drum and bugle corps from Butte may attend to perform exhibitions, along with a local band.
Beaverhead post American Legion schedules a dinner in Dillon at the Andrus hotel followed by officer nominations for the coming year. A mining district convention delegation to Butte will be organized to boost the Fourth of July celebration. H. M. Snow will speak on first aid and junior baseball plans will be reviewed.
Alex Crosby and Chester Gilbert open Crosby and Gilbert garage at East Helena and North Idaho, selling Chrysler and Plymouth cars with tires tubes and accessories. Dillon Gun Club prep for Fourth of July event with practice at the fairgrounds as Hap Apgar Leslie Smith lead singles. Dr E G Free wins doubles and handicap.
The national Better Housing campaign is launched in Beaverhead County, J. B. Kelly announces. Fred Simons will lead a house-to-house campaign to engage homeowners, with fall-appointed committees resuming work this summer across executive, consultation, building industry, loans and publicity groups.
John Koski proprietor of the Circle cafe moved into a new place of business last week occupying part of the Lyon's pool hall building. The cafe adds booths for ladies a larger kitchen and a longer counter. Mr and Mrs Ike Rife were here Monday from Medicine Lodge.
About 300 students are enrolled in the Montana State Normal College summer school. Of the total, 59 are men. Registration began Saturday and ongoing through Monday with classes starting Tuesday. Adelina Jarussi of Red Lodge is the new textbook librarian for the term and Elizabeth Arganbright of Moccasin is reappointed to the role for the next academic year. The event includes Flag Day services by Dillon lodge No. 1654 and a keynote by Douglas Gold of the Butte schools.
A large audience packed the training school auditorium for the Claudia Faust School of Dancing annual revue. Don's dance band provided accompaniment and a special late popular songs program before and during the intermission. Dancers included Merle Schmittroth Elsie Lloyd Patty Carrigan Mary Jane Paul and many others. After the show pupils and mothers presented Mrs Faust with a bouquet during intermission and guests attended a party at the studio yesterday afternoon.
Approximately 20 members of Diana Rebekah lodge attended the district meeting in Deer Lodge. Delegates included Della Hartwig and Muriel Tyre, with many members taking part in the program. Ruth Ann Dart was elected vice president of District No. 8. George C. Farrell named treasurer and H. G. Rodgers conductor at the Odd Fellows district assembly.
Ted Coburn was sentenced to ten years in Deer Lodge state prison after pleading guilty to holding up Charles Titua, night clerk at the Medlen hotel, early May 16. Coburn was arrested in Idaho with an alleged accomplice and identified as one of two gunpoint bandits who escaped with nearly $100.
Dillon Rotary club heard Harry B Baumberger of Oregon Short Line discuss railroad week and Montana rail service. He presented facts on railroads indispensability and provided statistics. Jay McCarthy highlighted Beaverhead county highway signs and the club agreed to help maintain the sign system near Dillon.
Mrs. Alice Gertch formerly Miss Alice Cox of Dillon died after a brief illness in Pocatello last Thursday. Friends in Dillon mourn her loss. Her body was brought to Dillon for funeral services held Saturday at Brundage Chapel with interment at Mountain View Cemetery.
Following the discovery of $16000 in ransom money in a car left on a Butte street overnight, federal, county, and city officers swarmed Dillon Sunday night into Monday. They joined local authorities in a search for William Mahan believed to be the driver. Mahan, a Montana ex convict, likely passed through Dillon en route to Butte. The Utah license plate on the car drew officers’ attention as they pursued leads.
Federal agents dumped 300 gallons of moonshine into the Beaverhead River near Dillon provoking a swift river current toward Twin Bridges. The cache was found in a barn on the Tom Dunn property on Kentucky Avenue. Officers seized 30 kegs of liquor and a 300 gallon still though no arrests were made. Dunn said he rented the barn to a local man.
Lee Hoerning was installed as exalted ruler of the Dillon Elks Lodge at Odd Fellows hall, succeeding Francis J. Gelhaus. He will represent the lodge at the national convention in Columbus, Ohio, with a slate of officers including Matt Kay and Harry Banks among others.
Glen Lyons and Stanley Gordan form a partnership to operate the Lyons pool hall on Montana Street beside City Drug. New equipment and stock are ready for a fountain service shop with cigarettes cigars and tobacco and confections for sale. Card tables are set up in the rear. Tom Benson sustained head injuries when his car collided with a Ford driven by Larry Magnus on Monday afternoon.
