Blackleg disease in cattle and other farm animals
Blackleg mainly targets young cattle from six months to two years though goats and sheep can be affected. The germ lives in soil for years and can enter through skin breaks or grazing. Early signs include dullness, lameness, fever, and loss of appetite. It is usually fatal but timely treatment may help some calves. Vaccination at three to four months is advised, with possible use of a combined vaccine in complicated cases. Peak danger is spring and summer on pasture. Carcasses should be burned or buried deeply with lime to stop spread.
