How and When to Harvest Alfalfa
Alfalfa should be cut as it comes into bloom for best feeding value. Early bloom yields the highest protein. in Kansas one tenth bloom gives 18.5 percent protein, half bloom 17.2 percent. Haymaking practices vary by region. leaves hold most protein, so careful curing reduces leaf loss. Rain exposure lowers color and protein, so protect hay during wet weather to maintain quality.
