Courage on the Montana frontier a 1877 Nez Perce relief raid
In mid July 1877 Will A Clark rode from Deer Lodge to Butte to summon volunteers amid Nez Perce movements threatening Missoula. Miners, ranchers and storekeepers joined the call, trading horses and gear as they rode toward Deer Lodge then Warm Springs Creek. The improvised expedition endured cold, hunger, and a night of poker before Sherman's order halted the raid, yet the volunteers returned home confident they had shown their mettle.
